What knife should I get my son for Christmas

Another Swiss Army knife vote. Great quality at a great price. Super useful on all fronts. Not likely to elicit disapproving stares from John Q public.

Vic Alox Pioneer X gets my vote because you gotta have the scissors! I was gifted a Vic Camper at that age and used it a ton, it's still in use today.

Here’s my Pioneer X

A bit out of your range but I just bought my daughter a mini grip for her first knife last month for her 9th b day.

Went to benchmades website where it lets you customize. I let her pick the colors and had her name and the date of gift etched on the blade.

But in your price range I like the delica or a SaK as mentioned several times.

Hey everyone. So my boy is 8 this year and I want him to have a pocket knife. I had one at his age so the timing is right. What pocket knife would you recommend? I want it to be something that is decent quakiqu so he will learn to aporeappre it. When I was kid I carried buck knives and I still ironically enoyen love buck knives and appreciate them. Give me some recommendations probably stay under $75 vuxks give or take

I can remember my first knife, it was a Case. A Case stockman similar to this one. It has lots of function, and my poor folks didn't have to spend much money. I used it in boy scouts camping and fishing. I have seen the plainer ones in new condition on several sites in the $25 to $35 range.

Another vote for a SAK. Any one of the 84mm or 85mm versions would be ideal, 'Junior 03' comes to mind.

Victorinox are great at that age, Nice blade for whittling and cool tools to show your friends, Grandpa gave me my first one and I still have it ...... somewhere:( A major plus is that it doesn't look too intimidating to others. IMO people still view Victorinox's as tools.

For a first knife - something of decent quality but not expensive. Something like a Buck Bantam 284 or 285.
If he appreciates it, shows he can take care of it, uses it responsibly, doesn't lose it, etc. - an upgrade to a nicer knife a few years down the road would be in order.

+ 1 for a Spyderco Delica. It’ll last him till he moves out, then you can get him something new and higher end. ;)
Just what I was thinking. That Delica should last him for years. A fine choice for a quality first knife.

I would suggest a Victorinox Tinker or Explorer model. The Electrician is a nice one too as it has two blades. Slip joints are un-imposing kind of knives and great for young and old. They also teach you about knife handling and not depending on a lock to keep you safe.

The Spydero Delica would be a good choice as well if you think he leans toward a modern type knife with a lock.

SAK Recruit
Buck 301 Stockman
Opinel No. 7
Buck 110
Buck 112
Buck 389 Canoe
Vintage 4 blade Scout knife (Ulster)
Rough Rider or Old Timer/Uncle Henry Barlow

These are what I've given my nephew/godson starting when he was five.
He just turned 12 this month.
(For some strange inexplicable reason he likes what I do.)

Victorinox Cadet
Spyderco Delica or Dragonfly
Benchmade Mini Griptilian

Personally I would go with the Griptilian because of their warranty because over the years of use, you can just get a new blade for just as cheap as the SAK..

Fully loaded Swiss Army Knife!

When I was that age I already had quite a few knives, most were junk, but as a kid who cares. I had switchblades, butterfly knives, Buck Knife, etc... but the one knife I always had on me was a Swiss Army Knife because of all the cool blades and gizmos. It always had something to get any job done that an 8 year old kid runs into : taking apart a VCR with the screwdrivers, cutting things, gripping with the pliers, magnifying glass for burning stuff, hacksaw and file were awesome, woodsaw for tree fort repairs, the tweezers always came in handy!

I remember using the corkscrew to screw the knife into a tree to use as a pull up to a higher branch so I could climb the tree.

I'll be getting my son one when he's ready. He's not even 3 y/o and when he sees a pocket clip on me he points and demands to see the knife I have on me that day.

Ontario Rat 2 is a well made folder for around $25. D2 steel versions can be had for a little more but still within you price range.
