What knife should I get?

For a modern knife, give a Kershaw Skyline a try - USA made with a nice steel, lightweight, and a good flipper. You can find them for ~$40, usually.
 
How about a Bull Nose by GEC ($50-60 new, but you can find 'em used for less):





Great little (but Tough) slip-joint to get you hooked on GEC!
 
It's hard to beat Kershaw's imported blades. Spyderco's tenacious/ambitious/resilience/persistence line are also nice. If you don't mind paying closer $60, then check out Spyderco Delica/Endura/Stretch line.
