What knife suprised you?

I was honestly surprised by the Schrade 7OT. My first folder was a Buck Crosslock (which I still think is a totally badass name) and my second was a Boker Infinity so I never really did the traditional thing.

I was surprised by the actual dimensions. I was expecting it to be more diminutive. I was also surprised that it had a really solid blade. Back in scouts I had a friends slippie self destruct on me and go through the web of my hand. so I had always thought traditionals were kind of weak. once I got the one hand open down and got a better belt pouch I carried it exclusively till I got my K-tusk.

When I got the folding Buck Kalinga, it surprised me by being better than what I was expecting. Light on the belt, feels good in the hand and performance that I expected.

What I didn't expect was that Buck decided to discontinue making them. I managed to order two more.

I was impressed by:
1) BM Nagara, incredible knife for the price.
2) All Byrds
3) Spyderco Tenacious/Persistence
4) Spyderco Salt 1 with Krein Regrind.

This Kershaw surprised me for the money. Well made and very heavy-duty.

Most recently, the Boker Titan Defender has been one of the big surprises of my knife buying history. I said it before, but will say it again, this knife was my first high dollar Boker, and it took over a year before I pulled the trigger on it. I've had a few custom folders in my lifetime and this knife has come the closest to replicating a custom I have seen. Another knife surprise is the entire line of ZT Knives. Such quality for such a low price is astounding. Finally, the Kershaw G-10 Tyrade has been an awesome surprise, especially at the price!

Spyderco Military. I had a Para before I bought the Military (from an internet company).

The knife is very close to the original Manix in size (which was also a tank). I like it.

For sharpness out of the box, my Kershaw JYDII in SG2/Ti.

For sheer utility, my Victorinox Farmer SAK.

For a real scare, the first time I deployed my present from my wife on Christmas morning, a BM 6150 auto Mini Rukus, it flew from my hand. Lucky for me, there was the sofa... and the cat. The cat had a 'close shave', so to speak - but the sofa was not so lucky!

For sheer quality/sharpness/value, every Bark River I've opened.

My happiest surprise was my Boker Trance. For what it cost me and how it's held up, it's a helluva knife bargain! Sadly, I lost it sometime about 3 weeks ago and she's still lost. :( Now I'm contemplating getting another or going for a Cold Steel American Lawman.

My biggest disappointment is with Emerson and the CQC14 I bought new. I am highly disappointed by the knife and the customer service. In summation, I bought a new CQC14 from Knifeworks and within a month of light useage the lock was easily failing. Two times within two months I sent the knife back to EKI. Shortly thereafter the lock started failing again. At that point I was disgusted and relegated it to my desk drawer. I will never buy another Emerson knife. So there ya have it.

Buck vantage pro.got it on the forums for 40.00 you cant go wrong. nice sharp blade, great handle & materials, deep pocket clip.even for a few $ more new,its a real bargain !

I am gonna go out on a limb here and actually say that my biggest surprise was a Sebenza... in a negative way. I have no complaints whatsoever about the knife, and it is absolutely high quality... but I think that having read all the hype all over the internet and hearing so much about it that I built it up to such a great thing in my mind that nothing in reality could have lived up to my expectations.

I bought a Spyderco Lava and was surprised to find it had a blade the size of postage stamp. (Okay, maybe a little bigger, but not much...)

I bought a Cold Steel Ti-Lite (titanium) and was surprised to find it was the biggest overpriced piece of junk I ever bought.

I handled a Spyderco Manix 2 in a passaround and was surprised to find it was amongst the best knives for the money I've ever held.

I was pretty surprised by the Spyderco Gayle Bradley for the street price. Pretty amazing.

Boker Automat 101

This knife is heavy, durable, full size and has a glass breaker/attitude compensator built in all that with a 4" blade and carries so deep in the pocket it looks like a pen.

I thought my Benchmade Dejavoo was going to be much bigger...kinda dissapointed.
Now I'm puzzled....

I want to get my hand on one of these puppys but i dont really know the size..can someone post a pick or tell me somthing to compare its size to? is it rough use or is it kinda a light use folder? thanks for any and all help.

Didn't you just post this TODAY?

the SOG Aegis. just alot better than i thought it'd be all around. light, fast, ergonomic...nice, versatile blade. good knife!

SOG Access Card 2

As stated in another thread, I was expecting a flimsy thing, but it is solid.

i'm glad this topic came up because i just retired a short sword that i thought really deserved mention. talk about a total surprise, i had a United Cutler Ninja To. the one with the black coated blade and the nylon web handle. well, i strip the coating, finished the blade, and made linen micarta handle scales for it.

i was kind of expecting it to fail because everyone says stainless is not a good steel to use for a sword due to it being brittle. plus when a sword retails for 20 bux, you expect the worst.

this little thing did it's job perfectly, it's been used ALOT for all sorts of hacking and such. never had one problem with it, amazing little cheapie :)
