Hi..

I am currently in the markey for a solid fixed blade knife...something u can drag in the mud and use in any environment....i don;t want anything too big 3-5 inches for the blade....kind of a man vs wild knife..and nothing that will break the bank....any suggestions and why? thanks

Look at the BK&T line. They're bomb-proof but possibly a bit large.
Fallkniven F-1.
Ka-Bar Mark II. Not the best knife in the world, but one of the best values around.
Cold Steel Bushman. It's a lot of knife for not much money.

BTW Welcome Aboard.

the benchmade rant fixed blades are really nice and only cost around $50 i believe.

I like the Finish Puukko's. They are tough and pretty cheap. Can get em new for under 30 bucks, and I found a almost new one at a yard sale for 2 bucks.

You can pick up some very nice knives from the people here on BF that make them for really good prices. Check out the makers area, I'm sure you will see something you like.

Ditto on the Warden.
The Busses are worth spending extra money on.

Remember, you get what you pay for! Price alone is a poor standard to assess a tool that you may have to depend on to keep you alive. Also, other peoples opinions are subjective, you have to hold a knife to get it's feel. The above postings are good knives and would serve you well, but search EBAY, then do some research into the knives and their Makers. Relentless, as well as Dozier knives and dozens of other makers can fit into anyones survival bag. I have Reeves knives and the Becker series and there are pros and cons to both. Good luck in your search.

If price is truly a factor, which you said it is, I'm casting another vote for the RAT RC-4. The size is right in what you said you wanted, you can get it in plain edge or partially serrated, and it is about 1/16" thicker than the RC-3. It's also made out of 1095 carbon steel which can take a beating and is easily sharpened.

You also mentioned "drag in the mud and use in any environment," so I again point to the RC-4. It has a coated blade that will greatly increase corrosion resistance. Yes, the edge is exposed and can rust, but if you keep it at least moderately clean in the field I haven't had any problems with mine.

Also, it comes with a very versatile kydex sheath. If you are indeed going to drag it in the mud, this is a lot easier to clean than a leather sheath.

They also have a "no questions asked warranty" that covers everything outside of normal wear from usage (including rust, so again, try to keep it at least moderately clean).

That all said, they have every size from 3-7 inches should you not want the 4 inch. Go here www.knifeworks.com, and check out RAT Cutlery as well as Ontario Knives (a joint effort). Some of the Ontario versions come in D2 steel, which is another good choice, although it is a bit harder to sharpen as the steel is harder overall.

RAT's and Barkies are popular. I don't have one, but people here seem to like them.

I carry an Ontario Pilots Survival knife, and I don't see that breaking anytime soon. You can pick those up under $40. Carbon blade, battle tested and been around for about 50 years.

check out this bayonet knife

SPAM removed. You were warned once this morning. Keep it up and you're gone.

A Buck 119, a whopping $34 at Wally World, is hard to beat for value in a SS fb knife. It is a bit bigger than your range - 6" - but quite decent. The Buck 655 short Nighthawk is a bit shorter - partially serrated - and $40 at Wally World. Les Stroud, Discovery's 'Survivorman' carries a 119 in some of his episodes. The Buck 105 'Pathfinder' is similar to the 119, but shorter - and available at Bass Pro stores, etc - $50-$60. They are all 420HC steel - quite decent - and stainless.

I love my Bark River and Marbles knives - but those Bucks are a great choice if regular care isn't high on the list.

Yeah, Buck knives are a great value. I carried a #119 for years. Still have it. I'll tell ya what though, if I were to buy one now, I would go with a #103.
