What knife to make with 1" steel?

Hi,

Fledgling "would be" dabbler who has made one knife completely with hand files (well, not made yet. It's ready for heat treat as soon as I can devise a homemade kiln.)

I bought a 1 x 24 piece of 1084 while ordering handle supplies, after I realized a small thin knife would be easier with hand tools than the thick chopper I originally had in my head for my second knife.

So, at the risk of being derivative, what style would you recommend to take advantage of the limited dimensions of my steel. I prefer "tactical" over the fancier knives. Do I have enough steel to make a small Kwaiken?

Don't worry about me knocking off someone else's design. My first knife came out looking very different from what I intended.:D

I make paring knives out of 1". How thick is your steel?

You don't say how thick the steel is, but there's lots you can do with stock that wide. Here are some of the things I do with 1" steel:

There are certainly limitations to using such narrow stock, but there's also the benefit of easy profiling.

ETA: Not that you'd necessarily want to, but feel free to copy any of my designs if you want. I'm not in this for the money.

Bird and trout knives, kiridashi, SGK, pukko, boning, maybe try a hidden tang, lots of options. A couple of kwaiken can be made from a 24" bar.

Good question about thickness. I'll have to measure tomorrow when I get home. Not sure of the top of my head.

For some reason, I can't see your photos. The only reason I know you linked is because the img code appeared when I replied to your post. Strange.

Those are sweet Hasperas. If you mind i ask. What do you dip the handles in or at least it looks like something? Thanks
