What knife will you pass down?

It depends on the context for me:

If I'm old and on my death bed: Then I'd give them all away to my kids.

If I just had my first child: I'd get him/her a leatherman to learn about functionality versus looks. Then if he/she earns my respect with it, we'll talk about getting them a solid production knife.

If my kid just graduated college: I'd let him/her pick out a one-off custom of their choice.

Kids will think of you and remember you by things like that old threadbare hat he always wore to cut grass, not by a multi hundred dollar treasure that stayed in the safe.

Grizz

I could be wrong but I think a few of my brothers kids will be more grateful for the financial help passed down for school than a slipjoint or hat. :p

Funny I found this thread, this is a quote from a post on a thread started yesterday.
13 Small Sebenzas? WOW! Im Still waiting on my first.... lol!
Im thinking This thread might start a spin-off "what knife will you pass down to your kids"

BTW Mine will be my ESEE 4 that I customized.

What will I pass on? My wife does not understand the need (or enjoy) a fine knife. My daughter, on the other hand, can enjoy a good blade. Everthing will go to my wife with the understanding that my daughter has first choice of anything my wife does not want.

That means my daughter will end up with the motorcycle, all of the tools, camping gear, guns, knives, and bayonets. My father's M3 trench knife should get passed on to her and then one of her kids.

This one shares my daughters birthday, I'll give it to her when she goes away to college. Everything else will be sold to pay for the trip.

Me being young (18) with my life ahead of me with no kids currently, it only creeps into my head what knife will i pass down to my child. ....

I wouldn't concern myself with such things. Pass on all your knives. Maybe in a few years you will indeed have a favorite. But you know.... my favorite a couple years ago now sits pretty much unused as a new favorite has moved onto the scene.

All of them. Last I checked I can't take em with me...

I'm already passing mine down to my son - gave him a ZT 0560 yesterday. He will eventually end up with all but one. Unlike craytab, I WILL be taking one with me - just in case I don't like what I see on the other side!

Any of mine that are still mine will be going to my nephew.

Except for the ones that I give away to friends prior to that final Corps trip.

This. I only have one child so he will get everything. If he's interested in knives when he gets older (he's only 1 now), I'm sure I will give him a few before I die. Regardless, before my time is up, I will teach him which knives are "extra special" in my collection and should not be sold off without thought. I've been teaching my wife about knives for 14 years, even though she's not interested, just so she has an idea what they are and what they are worth in case something unexpected should happen to me. I'll do the same with my son. Past that point, he can make up his own mind which to keep and which to sell.

My son gets my first case .....a red bone stockman . It got me into this hobby. It was my first "expensive" knife, had it in my pocket when i got engaged and when i walked down the aisle. It has more sentimental value than any of my sebenzas.

One boy gets the Randall Big Bear Bowie and the other gets the Randall model 3. They can do what they want with the rest.
