What knife would you take on "Alone" (History Channel Show)

There's a site that publishes the knife choices of every contestant for every season. There have been several LTWK Genesis, Mora companion, BK7, and kukris. A couple seasons ago contestants started bringing a Leatherman or SwissTool in place of a smaller fixed blade. Interestingly, this current season 5 is the all star season and several of them chose a Leatherman this year instead of what they chose the first time. I know there is a Wave, Super Tool 300, Charge TTi, and Rebar this year. (Next few sentences of this paragraph are spoilers.) One girl got a barbed fishhook stuck in a tendon in her hand, she couldn't remove it. She did not have a MT, but if she had she could have used the pliers and wirecutters to get that thing out.

The MT is fine here when you can still have a saw and large blade, either axe or large knife. Pliers can be very handy. The little saws are good for traps. And the flathead driver and can openers are modded before going out into a chisel and spoon gouge to craft bowls, bottles, spoons, blowers, etc. Some of these people are very creative.

Last month I took advantage of the Leatherman anniversary sale and got a Charge+ and Rebar. This was partially inspired by this show, partially by my brother-in-law, a Marine, who always has a Leatherman on him, and partially just on my evolving preferences. I've had a Wave since 2004 that is fine. The Charge+, with a CPM 154 locking blade, is especially nice.

To wrap this up, it makes more sense to name your entire system, rather than just the knife. I'd bring a 30" bowsaw, a Junglas (or any similarly sized large knife/kukri) and a Leatherman Charge. This is very close to what I use now, just a super sized saw and blade. I already use large knives in place of an axe/hatchet now, when I have access to axes anyway. No reason to change.

Yep the MT option could have really helped that one contestant out. Something so simple and just not having the tool needed to remove it.

My Koster muck in 3v ,these are perfect for that scenario-btw great topic

Right now ALONE is in Season 5, it's called Redemption because prior contestants have returned to try to win the $500K prize.

What I find interesting, this time around more contestants brought multi-tools than the last time they were on the show.

Most of the survivalists carry some type of bushcraft knife in the 4-6 inch blade length, which seems to work well for them.

I met Tracy Wilson from Season 2, she carried a BK-7 and told me it was a bit on the long side for most of her chores but it gave her comfort when a black bear sow and cub were on the other side of her shelter one night!

bear spray is the best tool for that job I think... 90% of people in a knife fight with a black bear would lose I expect

Lynn Thompson in a Backpack, he'd probably have all the knives one could need on him, so I just call out a knife and he hands it to me. Alternatively a Busse in a 7 inch blade length range.

Randy Chanpagne one of the contestants used a Condor. I ordered one for 52.00. To try it out.

RANDY CHAMPAGNE / CONDOR PRIMITIVE BUSH KNIFE: Survival instructor Randy Champagne from Boulder, UT also went the stainless route with the Matt Graham designed Condor Primitive Bush Knife. Measuring 8-inches of 420HC steel, this is a fairly long, but not too thick piece of kit. The sharpened swedge should help in defensive scenarios and the tubes in the handle can facilitate lashing if the scenario calls for it.

Anyone see Naked and Afraid, the two contestants are starving and near the extraction day. The man finds a snare that was supposedly lost by a trapper. So, he sets it in a small loop of about 10 inches, hoping for a raccoon. He checks it a a fawn is laying there. Mind this loop was on the ground. The deer is dead, doesn't show the snare on it and he just picks it up walks away. No removing any snare. Seemed extremely set up to me.

Yeah Randy is back this season and did not bring that thing again. I think he chose a little custom puukko.

Some have mentioned pliers based multi-tools as their "knife". Wondering if in a first aid situation if the contestant can dig into their supplied first aid kit where there are likely a scissors and tweezers? Or does that disqualify them at that point?

I like the Matt Graham primitive knife, but I wish it had a belt loop on the sheath. It's sort of like a big Condor Bushlore in stainless (420hc). I haven't changed "my knife choice"....
