What knives/brands have surpassed your expectations?

For me that would be,

BM 10700 Nagara, for a red box knife made in China it's a very nice knife.
Another one would be the Spyderco Tenacious, for the price you really can't beat it.

Don't really care for the Kershaw line and again it just could be the wierd blade shapes, I don't know but just don't care for them EXCEPT for the Skyline and the NergieII. Traditionally style and straight forward designs.

Kershaw - I had more Kershaws at one time than anything else. They make great knives for the money with a greater variety of designs, but the fit, finish, and materials are a tick below some of the other makers for most of their models. Some of their stuff is as good or better, though. The aesthetics are a little over the top and often seem too "Mall Ninja" to me over time.

That's exactly how I felt about Kershaw. I couldn't put it in words, but there it is. I still feel that there are some kershaws out there that are slightly lower grade than other higher end knives, and a lot of there designs do look a bit "Mall Ninja". But I guess why I was so impressed with the knives I got.

I'm aging myself here, but was raised on original pocket knives (slipjoints from the 50's) and am still drawn to them today. I have had the pleasure of purchasing 3 Boker Tree Brand slipjoints over the past year. I've been quite impressed with the manufacture, steel, and edge retention on all 3 knives. My first Boker was a peanut, which I ended up just storing away. These last 3 are stockman patterns, all good working knives.

In no particular order...

CR Sebenza
Spyderco Calypso
Ruff Rider MOP Sunfish (really!)
Microtech Manual SOCOM
Becker 7 and 9
Victorinox Farmer
Those cheap Kiradashis from Japan Woodworker

These knives have satisfied me fully.

Two knives have expected recently my expectations. Kershaw Mini-Cyclone which I bought for $28 and the knife that really surpassed my expectations: Michael Morris File Necker. I never expected quality to be so fine in every detail at $70. Amazing small fixed blade. I guess any good knife maker can exceed my expectations.

-Spyderco Para, I still don't care for any of the other recent spydies I've tried. The Para I like, a lot.

-Strider Sng, simply a great design. Super thin, super light and super strong. A Para on steroids, and no giant thumbhole bump to ruin the look.

-Bradley Alias, simply a great knife for the price.

-Buck/Mayo TNT CF & Wiamea, super light and well built. Gent-Tac defined.

-Hinderer XM-18, we shall see, it should arrive in a couple days. I hope it combines the best of my Umnumzaan and Sng.

-Al Mar Mini SERE, superb little folder.

My suggestion aren't the best knives: after all it's only logical that a $100 Spyderco should be good. I suggest:

Rough Rider

These don't offer the best steel but I do think they are far better than their humble price tags suggest.

I can't really count my Busses, since I expected greatness out of them to begin with. All they can really do is MEET my expectations.

My Buck Nighthawk, on the other hand, for its price has proven to be a great knife. I'm quite happy with it.
