Another currently active thread asks what knives do you really use on a daily basis. The poster did not want your entire collection or favorites, but the ones you used daily. I find these threads most interesting so of course I read this one.

There were 28 responses when I read the thread. The posters listed a total of 101 knives individually by name. Of these only 6 were SAK's. I found this to be most interesting.

I've been carrying knives on my person for over 55 years. These were Case, Old Timer, and other similar slip joint knives. Thirty or so years ago I discovered SAK's and pretty much carried them as my only knife until the Buck 110 appeared on the scene and revolutionized the knife world as we know it today.

Great! Now I had my new 110 but what about the screwdriver on my SAK?. What about that Dr. Pepper or Green River that needed opening? Or that metal ring thingy on top of the coffee can after you had lost the little key?

Well of course I had to carry the SAK along with the latest, greatest knife of the day. This to accomplish the other little chores required of a knife besides cutting stuff. I'd estimate 95% (or more!) of what I use a blade for can be accomplished with a full sized SAK.

Please don't misunderstand. I own, use, and adore Striders, CRK's, Carsons, 110, and my other high end knives. I seldom am without one of these modern knife wonders, but........I ALWAYS have at least one SAK along with me to take care of life's other little chores and honestly, use to cut stuff oftentimes more than the wonder blade. Peruse the forums sometime and see how many threads you can find where someone is bemoaning the tip he broke off his $400.00 wonder knife while trying to drive a screw or while prying something. SAK's eat that stuff up.

Guys and Gals; do you REALLY only carry and use the modern wonder blades? Or are you seceretly carrying and using the SAK's and slippies and don't want to endanger your reputation as a knife person? :D

I also enjoy the frequent "If you could only have one knife" threads. Usually responses settle on the wonder knives or so it seems to me. I interpret these threads to mean what one single knife would you want to CARRY and USE and for me this question is simple; without a doubt, my selection would be a SAK, most probably one of my two favorites, a Soldier/Pioneer or the Explorer....OK, the Pioneer.

These are just the musings of an old man who was already pretty old when the wonder knives appeared on the scene. OK, flame suit on and hiding behind the couch. Or......maybe it's just time for my nap.

I've progressed and 'grown into' the SAK. I always have one now. I still have a one-hand opening blade of some sort in my back pocket, but I end up using the SAK for everything.

A agree completely about a SAK. I think of it as a line of defense against being tempted to use my "good" knife as a screw driver or pry bar. I always have both. I could easily use just the SAK 99% of the time. My main resistance to using it more is that it dulls more quickly than my main blade. Show me a SAK with premium steel and that would be very interesting. Leatherman has come out with some offerings that are basically a premium one-handed folder with some added tools and they are a nice hybrid of the two kinds of knives.

Hi gang,
Every day the first thing I put in my pocket is a Leatherman sideclip.
I had this thought that a leatherman is a SAK with pliers attached.
I use it everyday, for something. A couple of days ago it was used on my daughters washing machine, tighten the clamps on the machine hoses.
Yesterday, it opened up soda bottles.
Today we will see what it does.
oh well just my two cents.
Good knife hunting

SAKs are the only "folders" that I can be bothered to actually use. Gotta like those things. I often carry a SAK Ranger. I never use the knife blades on it, but the other things, saws, awl and screwdrivers in particular, often come in handy. But I'm not sure what you're saying here, though. My main EDC knife is always a fixed blade. I don't use it as a screwdriver, but I might do a little prying with it, depending on what I'm carrying. If it happens to be a Busse Game Warden, as it often is, I can tell you that it's not going to suffer tip breakage anytime soon. In fact, I would bet money that I could baton the Game Warden through a SAK, or at least a SAK blade, and still have the GW intact, only with edge damage. :p

Yes I carry and use my wonder knives:thumbup: I routinley use my DDR Gunhammer LTC, sebbie, Hinderer etc. I like too I paid alot for em...and I dont pry with em so I have never broken a tip. However sometimes I do carry a sak or a case trapper or something like that but usually in conjuction with my wonder knives.

I used to EDC SAK for eight years. Great knife.
Little over two years ago I discovered Spyderco and switched to this brand. I carry two or three at the same time. My smallest EDC is Kopa with 2.5" blade and biggest Persian and R2 with 3.5". In general I use them only to cut something, few days ago I had to pry heavy duty staples out of the wall with my R2, put some chips on the edge, fixed it. My family, friends, and coworkers know me like a knife person and not panic, when I am using knife. But I choose knife wisely when people around.
I still have my SAK, the only non-Spyderco, which I have. I am taking it when I have to fly. I am concern with possible disappearance of my spydies from a suitcase.

I also carry the latest and greatest tactical folder on the market and I use my Case Gunstock pattern slipjoint for about 99% of my knife chores. Course I've always admitted to this and I have no problem with it being this way. I love the large tactical style folders as the really good ones have the best of materials in them and have been built with the newest of locks, ZT0500, BM 610, and/or overbuilt, ZT0200, Strider AR, and/or are built with total precision, Sebenza, Bladetech Rijbak. Hey, I don't apoligize for buying and maybe never really using the knives as I get a lot of satisfaction just knowing I have them!

There was a time when I was into collecting handguns and had a small collection of them. Had fun taking them out to shoot on the weekends, but then they were cleaned and put back up. I didn't get the satisfaction from them that I get from the knives, and I can carry the knives everyday with no problems and use them if I so desire.

Anyway, guess I went a little OT on that but that is my stance.:)

My folder does all of my cutting for me. For the past several months it's been a Tasman Salt at work and a AG Russell Fruit knife at home.

My SAKs and Multis do everything else. I use the knives so little on my multi-tools that I modded one to have no knife at all. Ergonomically SAKs/Multis simply cannot keep up with the modern folding knife, which is fine because the modern folding knife cannot keep up with the overall utility of SAKs/Multis.

If I had to pick one it would be a SAK/Multi but I haven't had that come up yet, so I carry both. :)

I really should start carrying my Vic Farmer more often.
Purple95, that is a SAK with character if ever I saw one:)

I got turned off SAKs when Leatherman multis arrived on the scene , the advent of the wave clinched that . Dont get me wrong I still like them , just dont carry them for work or play .

I mostly carry an use a multi , an a Strider PT . The multi alternates between a Leatherman Charge Ti , an a Victorinox spirit . 70% Leatherman , 30% Victorinox . I will occaisionally add a Spyderco military to the mix , if SD use is a possibility . I often work bad areas . The PT an the multi are constants , the rest of my stuff is so much ballast .

As I always have a Leatherman Micra in my pocket I guess that I am allowed more flexability in my knife choice but since 1972 I have carried my Buck 313 Muskrat (1st year of mfg.)

I have an edc rotation but 95% of the time I carry and use my Delica 4 PE. It just feels more natural in my hand than any of the other 46 folders that I have. Some never get carried at all.
Others in the rotation: Salt 1 SE for yard work
Stainless PE Dragon Fly for golf
BM/HK 14210 PE every day carry / shooting range
CRK Small Classic Sebenza everday carry
Blur s30v PE for bad areas
BM Vex for bad areas
30 YO Buck 110 for Hunting
BM 705 PE everyday carry
