What Knives Do You Really Use: Revisited

Great! Now I had my new 110 but what about the screwdriver on my SAK?. What about that Dr. Pepper or Green River that needed opening? Or that metal ring thingy on top of the coffee can after you had lost the little key?

....

Guys and Gals; do you REALLY only carry and use the modern wonder blades? Or are you seceretly carrying and using the SAK's and slippies and don't want to endanger your reputation as a knife person? :D

....

I secretly carry a Leatherman Wave for all non-cutting tasks. Didn't mention it in the other thread because I don't see it as a knife.

Or......maybe it's just time for my nap.

:D

I carry an older Super Leatherman and a monster SAK (the Swiss Champ with S.O.S. Kit) in my briefcase when I carry it...I'm too fat to have anything on my belt and they're too bulky for pocket carry.

I took a good look at my SAK today...I'd forgotten just how much functionality is there and just how high the quality is for a good price. Amazing!

Anyway, the point is that they do get used fairly often, and in a way are almost EDC.

If I had to go with just one tool, it would be something like a Charge AL with 154CM blade, or maybe a Powerassist with AUS8 blade. That way I still have the really useful tools for daily carry and a blade that will hold a decent edge.

Next down would be a SAK, though I would miss the pliers dearly. The steel on the Vics is decent enough, I carried a small tinker solo for a few years.

Last would be the one handed blades with the 'super' steels that I spend so much money on. They cut well, but that's all they do well. Can't do anything pliers do, can't turn screws to any degree of useful torque, can't pry without risking cutting something/myself or wrecking the edge.

As knife knuts, we post stuff about how we can't see how people go through the day without a knife, then come running to us to open/cut something after asking why we have a knife. Well, some may wonder how others can get by with a knife, but not pliers, file, screwdrivers, scissors, flashlight, or some other pocket gear. The sak doesn't have the best steel, but it has other stuff.

regardless if I am carrying my Strider AR , PT or a small fixed blade , I always have a slip or lockback of some sort on me , Case Seahorse Whittle , Lone Wolf City Knife , Winchester Trapper or Queen Mt Man....

Over the years I have carried many different knives, including SAKs and multi-tools.
But these days I find that I just don't need a SAK or multi-tool very often....maybe a couple of times a week at most.
So for myself, it just not worth carrying one everyday.

Thirty or so years ago I discovered SAK's and pretty much carried them as my only knife until the Buck 110 appeared on the scene and revolutionized the knife world as we know it today.

Just wanted to note that thirty years ago, the 110 had already been on the scene for around 14 years.

But to your central question ........ For a long time, I carried a large, single-blade folder (usually an Endura). I recently quit, however, and carry smaller slipjoint knives or a SAK because I've found they simply cut better. One-hand opening in .04385 seconds isn't that important for me.

I carry and use a Buck Hartsook every day opposite of what ever folder I might carry. Usually that goes to the Sebenza. The Hartsook is such a fantastic little knife, it's like a SAK blade only S30v and Bos heat treated. VERY sharp in an ultra slim package. It rides in my shirt pocket while on duty every day.

I always carry a lockblade and a SAK, usually a Victorinox Cadet. I don't doubt I could get away with just the SAK, though. For the past two years, a Small Seb has been the locking knife of choice over 90% of the time.

I use my primary folder for cutting the vast majority of things that need cutting, and then have a few other knives because it's my hobby.

The second most used tool that I carry every day is my Leatherman.
The pliers come in handy almost as much as my knives, and having a whole set of screwdriver bits with you goes a long way.

In my opinion all human beings should carry a good Multi-tool.

I carry whatever strikes my fancy off my knife shelf. I mean I pay good money for these things and they are tools so why not, plus if they get messed up it gives me another excuse to tinker. My wife's EDC is an older spydie G10, ATS 55 civilian for defence and a kershaw chive for chores.

lately it has been the Kershaw Groove. excellent knife. usually though its my Kerhsaw JYD2 and my keychain SAK. I use both alot.

Side note to Purple95
Yes, I remember the key thingy on the coffee cans. We used to unwind the metal strip on it after opening the cans. We used the "key" to open the old locking doorknobs that had the hole in the middle of the knob.

Meanwhile back to the thead.
I carried a Tinker on a daily basis for a number of years. Gotta have a screwdriver on me at all times. These days I carry a Leatherman Micra in addition to whatever EDC I have. Nice thing about the Micra is it has screwdriver blades with square corners. They bite better than the rounded corners on the Vics.

Members,

Thanks to all who replied. It appears that many of us are essentially on the same page when it comes to using a SAK type knife as a secondary carry to a primary, more robust folder.

My personal team has been a small Sebenza or an SnG paired with a Soldier/Pioneer. In my opinion, those knives compliment each other very well.

As for the early poster who wanted to baton a Busse knife through one of my SAK's........

Cheers,
dan :)

I always carry a fixed blade, currently and RC 3, a one hand folder, UPS man is bringing by a RIJBAK today and I also always have a Vic Farmer and a Leatherman Charge TTi. The Farmer and the Charge are rarely used for their blades but daily used for the tools. Cutting duties are left up to the larger better suited tools.

I used to carry a Victorinox 'Explorer' as a multi-tool, however these days I find that the vast majority of my 'hardware' needs are filled by either my Buck 110 or my Buck 271 Alpha Hunter.

We all have rotations and will continue to do so. The quest is the perfect EDC set. Doub't there is such a thing, it's the variety that makes it interesting. Lately I took off my Leatherman Wave from my belt and replaced it with my Leatherman Skeletool. It compliments my blue Vic Farmer very well. To complete my trio I carry one of several large folders.
