What knives should we post in Shoptalk?

Or maybe more to the point, what kind of post about knives? I am asking because the last knife I posted on here made me realize something. This is not the gallery and I may have posted as if it was. I mean I did not ask for help or criticism, just posted the latest knife I finished. I may have done that with the last few. :o

Sorry if it was in bad form.

That doesn't bother me much at all - we all like looking at knives :D

But you are right, the Gallery is the right place, I guess...

I think that the general rule of thumb is that if you are just looking for general comments, then you should post in the gallery. However, if you want criticism or opinions on something technical, post here. That is what I would go by, normally.

Well. Except your pics were a conclusion to your design and build pics. I think completed knives that have no former discussion in Shoptalk, or aren't your first knife etc, might be best in the Gallery.

I don't believe our day to day making of knives should be posted here. Certainly new makers should be given a chance to show, however. There is a gallery and also a place to list for sale. Frank

One thing I have noticed is if you want feedback or critisism on your knives posting in the gallery is not going to get you what you want. If you are an established maker showing your work the gallery is fine. But for us new guys I think the shoptalk section is a big help to us for the advice offered.

I post all of my WIP threads here for a couple of reasons. I like the feedback I get while I'm working. It allows me to make course corrections if I do something stupid (and someone tells me what I should be doing instead). I've also been told that threads like those are helpful to newer makers that might be looking for low tech ways to solve problems.

In any case, if it is determined that we shouldn't be posting these WIP threads, let me know and I'll stop.

i never look at the gallery, I personally enjoyed your dagger WIP, put a little WIP together and keep showing them here

I agree, I've seldom been to the gallery.

Put em here, especially if they have an interesting feature, or we saw parts of in in progress.

I think this is absolutely the place for WIPs. Please don't stop!!! Just posting a finished knife without any context/build or asking for something specific to the making of that knife belongs in the gallery, IMO.

It's a good question. Lately, I haven't posted any online unless they were part of the KITH, or upon specific requests for pics, such as whole blade etching, or a switchblade comb. Before that, it was usually when I had a question about a section of the knife and how to do it better or differently.

What are the general thoughts about getting Spark to start a couple new subforums, a First Knives subforum and a WIP subforum? Personally, I'd love to be able to browse all the WIPs without sorting through other threads.

Stacy already made a sticky of links for the WIP threads.
They are all together there.

Thanks for your input. I spend most of my time in Shoptalk. This is where most of my friends on BF hang out so this is where I feel like sharing. I'll make sure that I only do it in a shop/progress/critique context. The good thing is that with my very low knife output, it's not likely to clutter the space much. ;)

PS: I also never go to the gallery. :(

I will also agree that I rarely go to the gallery. I have posted a couple of times in there, and it just seems dead.

It is really shame, because some REALLY nice work gets overlooked since the gallery is far less frequented.

I personally have no issues with makers (or anyone) who posts a knife they made or are making in ShopTalk. Nothing better than seeing knives!

Once I realized that my work was maturing and I wasn't flailing around in *complete* darkness, I started posting to the Gallery. Now I go there as often as here. It's not as chatty, but it's a thrill to know that some of my knives have been viewed 400 times!

I agree with the above - WIPs, experiements, etc. all seem right at home here in shoptalk. I prefer finished knife stuff in the gallery because it's where I go to see that kind of thing.

I didn't notice there was a gallery either ;) You were just showing your finished WIP, I think it's fine, and I personally was really looking forward to seeing that particular one finished! :D
