Doesn't matter what state it is, it is illegal to carry any weapon onto school property. You don't need it. Leave it at home. If you are having a problem with someone go to school authorities, your parents and the police.

Stop carrying the knife to school.

This seems incredible. Any 15 year old should be smart enough to realize what would happen.

You will be instantly suspended, and the knife confiscated. The knife will be turned over the local police, and you and your family are in court. They of course will need to hire an attorney, and I'll let you tell us where they're going to get the $7,000 - 8,000 for that. It could be more based on how much trouble you get in.

Fortunately, you're in a fairly easy-going state, so you'll more than likely be released into their custody with a mark on your record that will come up at _every_ job interview, _every_ school you try to attend, and probably at least once with every person you date. Doesn't matter that this record would be expunged in 3 years' time: it'll dog you for the rest of your life.

And if I'm wrong, you spend a little time in juvey. But I doubt it.

And last, when all is said and done, you'll be expelled from school after your court date.

Or you could leave it in a drawer at home, and live a nice, quiet life without these problems.

The guys are offering excellent advice. Its not worth it for the trouble you would get in. Leave the knife at home.

In case you're the type who wants to break the rules, who's going to get off on finding out how many laws you're breaking and how many fines and penalties are involved...

The simple answer is plenty.
If you get caught with it, you'll find the price far higher than any value.
So you're ripping yourself off.
Chances of getting caught with it, with today's technology and higher awareness - pretty high.

Why do you carry the 5" butterfly knife to school? -( As you wrote in your post.)
Do you carry it with you in school?

At least he is smart enough to ask!;) Seriously, I've found that people who use the advise "when in doubt;ASK" cause a lot less grief for themselves and others than those who "when is doubt, just do it."

BTW, I'm not ripping on you Watchful and you had really good advise. :)

Simply a foolish thing to do. Why would you do that when you know you are breaking the law? Why do you want to break the law?
You will be Expelled, and criminal charges would be filed. It would screw up your life big time.

it's legal to own a butterfly knife in Michigan. it's illegal if it's over "4 blade though.

you just posted this. So you already know, that according to you, the knife isn't even legal in your state, much less in the hands of a 15 year old.

Here's a short list of some of the laws you will be breaking:

Michigan -750.226... Carrying with unlawful intent
Any person who, with intent to use the same unlawfully
against the person of another, goes armed with a pistol
or other firearm or dagger, dirk, razor, stiletto, or
knife having a blade over 3 inches in length, or any
other dangerous or deadly weapon or instrument, shall
be guilty of a felony, punishable by imprisonment in
the state prison for not more than 5 years or by a fine
of not more than 2,500 dollars.

- 380.1313 Dangerous weapon found in possession of pupil...
(1) If a dangerous weapon is found in the possession of a pupil
while the pupil is in attendance at school or a school activity
or while the pupil is enroute to or from school on a school bus,
the superintendent of the school district or intermediate school
district, or his or her designee, immediately shall report that
finding to the pupil's parent or legal guardian and the local
law enforcement agency.
(2) If a school official finds that a dangerous weapon is in the
possession of a pupil as described in subsection (1), the school
official may confiscate the dangerous weapon or shall request a
law enforcement agency to respond as soon as possible and to
confiscate the dangerous weapon. If a school official confiscates
a dangerous weapon under this subsection, the school official
shall give the dangerous weapon to a law enforcement agency and
shall not release the dangerous weapon to any other person,
including the legal owner of the dangerous weapon. A school
official who complies in good faith with this section is not
civilly or criminally liable for that compliance...
(4) As used in this section, 'dangerous weapon' means a firearm,
dagger, dirk, stiletto, knife with a blade over 3 inches in length,
pocket knife opened by a mechanical device, iron bar, or brass knuckles.
History: Add. 1987, Act 211, Imd. Eff. Dec. 22, 1987 ;--Am. 1995,
Act 76, Eff. Aug. 1, 1995 .
Popular Name: Act 451

I don't know if they'd fine you at all. In fact, they'd probably first verbally praise you. Then you would be approached by all manner of attractive women, propositioning you for sex. Sometime after that, FOX, HBO and various publishers will approach you with movie rights and a book deal. Around this time, you'll gain the respect of not only all your friends, but of everyone in your whole town, state, and possibly country. Benchmade will approach you to do a photospread on balisongs that will be featured in their 2007 catalog. After the wild success of your HBO special, Benchmade decides to replace their butterfly logo with a detailed drawing of your face. Soon after this, People Magazine will name you #2 in their world's sexiest men article, prompting you to take up acting. You'll go on to star in numerous blockbuster movies, award-winning infomercials, and your own series of workout videos that include wild undulating two-handed balisong flipping routines.

So in essence - go for it!

When I was 14 I got called into the office and searched, even though I hadn't done anything (that they knew about). I had two switchblades and two pocketknives on me, and a set of spiked brass knuckles in my backpack. Because I was lucky, and able to think quickly, all they found on me was one of the pocketknives. I still got yelled at by the cops and kicked out of school. The next day they caught five guys I knew with knives, and they all got arrested and kicked out of school. It was not fun. It's probably not a good idea to bring it to school, because there is a chance you'll get caught. And if you do, it won't be worth it, trust me, it won't. Save yourself the trouble and leave it at home.

I used to carry a balisong to high school when I was 15. I kept it in my jacket pocket for SD during traveling to and from school. In hindsight it might not have been the best thing. I never pulled it out or used it, and thankfully I never got a chance to ruin my life with it. A pepper spray, mini-maglite with some kubotan training would have been better. Of course a lot of schools these days don't allow pepper spray either.

Where i live you would get expelled from school for the remainder of the year, then you are forbiden to attend any other public school in the city. So it would add at least a year to your high school plus any legal action they decide to take against you.
