What leather for strop??

I think the thinner it is, the tighter it has to be stretched. My strops are block-mounted, and I used a $3 tool belt from Harbor Freight.

I bought mine in Tandy. I do not really remember exact name - but it is marked as #9831-00. It does not have good grain structure but many pores instead. Yo may see it close here (about 15th second of this video):

Hope it will help. It is relatively thin, not as thin as like deer skin, but not like tooling leather (5mm).

Thanks, Vassili.

The strop I have that's seen the most use is made from 3/4 oz vegetable tanned lining leather. It's been in continous use for the last four years. I've also made one out of 8/9 oz leather. Any thickness will do provided it's mounted properly.

I found leather to be a bit 'soft', leading me to round the edge too often. I have now moved over to using the polishing compound on a slice of mdf.

I had similar problem with HandAmerica's leather. I turned to MDF, but then return back to leater, but got thiner and with more pores. Results were quite good.

Thanks, Vassili.
