what lens's are you useing with your camera?

The Canon 16-35 f/2.8 L has superb quality for a super-wide angle zoom... but does not compare favorably to good prime.

The adapter to put an Olympus Zuiko lens on a Canon EOS body is non optical, with no glass elements, and has no affect on the optical performance of the lens. It is just a slender spacer, an empty ring, to put the lens a little further away from the film plane/sensor plane, since the lens-mount-to-film-plane distance of the Canon EOS line is closer than that of the Oly/Z line.

It does however, makes it a complete manual lens as it's blocking all signals for the sensor contacts.

That's true, Tony. I was just answering specifically what he asked. It didn't occur to me to mention that it makes it all manual, with no contacts with the camera, because that doesn't matter much to me –but it certainly legitimately might to some.

Don't use the newer Olympus lenses for the "Four Thirds" system. They won't work. Use the old, manual 35mm lenses, like the 21 f/3.5 or the 18. They're better lenses and cheaper, anyways. Get 'em used on places like Fredmiranda.com or photo.net or keh.com.

I generally rotate a 20mm Sigma, a 28-105mm Sigma, and a 70-300m Sigma lens on my 2 Canon EOS Elan IIe bodies.

The following lenses get the most use on my Pentax *Ist DS.
Pentax 18-55mm Kit lens
Sigma 50mm 2.8 DG macro
Tamron 135mm 2.5 Adaptall mount.

Lenses I'd like to get
Pentax DA 10-17mm 2.5-4.5
The Pentax limited series lenses (31mm 1.8, 43mm 1.9, 77mm 1.8)

There are rumors of some new fast zooms coming from pentax later this year that have me anticipatory as well.

now that i got my lenses, i wouldnt mind having a 14mm prime, a 24-300mm zoom, and a 400 and 600mm prime....

but then, i'd like to have a lot of things :D

Canon 1D and 20D Cameras
All lenses are Canon unless noted otherwise.

15mm/ 2.8 Fisheye - I use DeBarrelizer to fix distortion when I don't want it
17-40/4.0 L - I use this alot
Tamron 28-70/2.8 - Workhorse
35/2.0 - not used very often, but a lifesaver when needed
50/2.5 Macro - very sharp, fun
Lensbaby 50/2.0 - Lots of fun
85/1.8 - sharp and fast. I use this for model headshots alot
70-200/2.8 L - Used to be my workhorse until digital
200/1.8 - My Avatar image was taken with this lens and a 10D in the backyard. Heavy, but the sharpest lens I've ever owned by far!!!

It'll still work in AE
No it won't. You'll have to set the exposure manually. Unless you can explain how the exposure signal from the camera's body can somehow wirelessly skip the adapter ring and magically set the aperature on the Olympus lens.

Just two lenses right now on my 20D

Sigma 30 f/1.4

and Sigma 50-500mm "Bigma"

"To Buy" List:

50 f/1.4
85 f/1.8
(email me when you're ready to upgrade, Tony :D)

Kenko 1.4x

Kenko Macro Tube Set

My photo needs are simple...and I prefer primes over zooms. That said, I love the Bigma...great "walk around" lens...a bit heavy, yes. But very nice to have.

My camera collection is too small...

Canon Rebel 2000 body with the 28-80 garbage kit lens, then I bought a 50/1.8 and 100/2.8 macro to go with it.

My next camera purchases are expected to be a longer zoom - maybe a 70-300? - and a digital body. I'd prefer to get a 30D, but my budget will probably limit me to a used 20D or Rebel XT.

That said, you can have a lot of fun with just a few lenses! The stuff I have at photo.net was taken with my Rebel, or with an older digital camera. For a 2MP credit card sized camera, the Casio Exilim EX-S2 was a kickass camera... now I have an EX-Z3 which gives a 3x zoom and 3MP.

I use the dump truck photo as a desktop screen fairly often. One of my favorite pictures, and that was taken with the EX-S2.

That's an easy one. You set the aperture on the lens to the AE setting and the camera automatically sets the shutter speed based on the light the sensor sees.

My lensbaby 2.0 lens doesn't even have any camera connections and it works just fine in AE on my Canons.

Canon EOS cameras are usable in manual or aperture priority modes. In Av mode your EOS camera will set the appropriate shutter speed based solely on the amount of light entering the lens

Right. Forgot about that feature. Was focusing on the lens, not the body.

Only if it doesn't sense a preset aperature from an EF lens. It'll based the shutter speed on that aperature setting.

I'll work in AE not Shutter priority or Program. I have a set up working with a Hasselblad to Pentax 645 doing the same thing

that moon shot is intense... how have you liked the image quality from it so far? (the 50-500mm)

having 200mm as my limit at the moment is frustrating when i want it, even though thats rare.... but i dont particularly want to spend 3000 plus for something i use rarely, even though i want it

I haven't used the "Bigma" (Sigma 50-500) but I used to own and use the Sigma 170-500. While my Canon 600 f/4 L IS USM absolutely smokes the Sigma 170-500 f/5.6-6.3, I actually was rather fond of the 170-500. I was sharp enough for a decent 12x18" print, which is damned good for a $400 500mm lens. It was the only tele lens I've had, to the best of my recollection, which was faster than the officially stated aperture and longer than the officially stated focal length. Also, it's slick to have a 500mm lens that only weighs about three pounds, and can be carried in a common lens case–a 500 that you can easily and comfortably carry around all day. Further, when you plan to climb a mountain or crawl through the mud, it is a lot less stressful doing it with a $400 dollar lens than a lens close to 20 times as expensive. Anyway, I give a qualified recommendation for the Sigma 170-500, if you are looking for serious lens reach at an affordable price.

I expect the Bigma deserves a similar qualified recommendation. I've had various Sigma lenses and my experience has been that, while they usually don't make the best (though the Sigma 70-300 is better than the Nikon 70-300), they don't make crap, either... and they give you a lot of bang for your buck.

Mike

Depends on who you ask, Seth.

Personally, I really like the Bigma. Like I said, it is a great walkaround lens that gives great results. It does great across nearly the entire range, peaking at 400-420mm, and at f/8.

It does not do as well as a prime, of course, but imho, better than any zoom in its class (mm for mm).

People who prefer long primes for birding will not like it...those who already have a 70-200 won't like the overlap...

I got mine for $675 used....:D....and I don't mind the length/weight...so for me, it's perfect.

Do I wish it was a f/4 "L" type lens? Heck ya!!! But it's good enough for now. :p
