What lies beneath... CAUTION: Naked pics...

Does anyone know for sure what the Black undercoat is ?

If anyone at Busse knows please let us know.

Yeah, that's what I would like to know. The black "undercoating" thing is pretty strange. I thought it might be decarb, but then, it doesn't seem to rust very aggressively at all, so perhaps it is not.

I'd like to know too. Perhaps Jerry could chime in?

I thought it was decarb, but like Elen said, it doesn't seem to rust too aggressively.

One thing is for certain, it's a new process. It wasn't there on older knives.......

I'd hope that black layer is the decarb cuz if it's only a primer layer then you'll need to sand that off AND the decarb layer below it. Just more work.

Not more work for me... I think she looks cool just the way she is!

I have stripped LOTS of INFI, SR-101 and SR-77. I have always seen that black undercoating. I never left it and always sanded it off.

But, after dealing with and learning about the decarb layer on the Comp blades, I have to wonder if that black coating is decarb????? Or WHAT????? I have always been curious about that black sub-coating. ????????????????????

I wish someone who knows would fill us in.

.

Maybe we should just keep asking until someone in the Busse Crew stops by to say either that it's a secret or that it's (enter explanation here, and add Let's Drink!) :D

I love that stripper... it makes the handles look brand new afterward. Sucks all the grease and sweat and oil right out. After finding out that a blade can actually rust under the coating... I go no coat as well. I can far better care for steel and a coating can.

It's hard to tell from the pics......but could the blade have received a DCBB before it was coated? The micro-peening might still be holding some remnants of the coating, giving it that cool dark finish.

Just a thought.
