Here's my 2c's relating to the expense of customs: Contrary to the knife equiviant of wive's tales, all custom knives are not expensive. If you go to a knife show, you'll see price is not an indicator of quality. You will find many local makers who don't have the national name recognition yet produce pieces of equal or better quality. You will also see and feel the difference compared to production knives. I just returned from the OKCA mini-show where I saw hand forged damascus fixed blades of incredible quality and pattern starting at $125. Another table featured nice natural handled fixed blades with file work starting at $50. What is most important to me is finding that perfect knife that has every feature you want or, a maker who will blow you away with his modesty and friendliness who will make your perfect knife. Finally, go to a knife show just to experience the comradere and good will that reminds you why your a knifenutt. I hope you'll have the opportunity some day. When you do, bring lots of money cause there's lots of knives!

Thanks Mike for that tableful of tips.

A friend of mine who had just returned from the New York Knife Show related his wonderful experience.

Can I make up for the lack of "lots of money" with a "heapful of enthusiasm?"

The idea is to "stay focused", I was told if I am ever at a knife show but saddled with limited funds.

Knife makers, I have learnt, are basically very simple folks and are quite courteous and amazingly nice!
