What makes a Gentleman's Knife?

A Gentleman's knife is defined by how many parts of ourselves we remember, when one carries it.

And... it must have a nail file of some sort;)

Give me examples. Trying to wrap my head around this sub-genre of Traditionals.

To me, a "Gentleman's" knife is one that is not as intimidating as the larger variety. Oh, and should include scissors for various small odd jobs.
To me, this Schrade 707 fits the bill nicely. Other knives come into play when not worried about being a Gentleman. ;)

For a start, nothing too big and hulking, uncouth:D
...

... slim is the keyword here.

Small, slim and think, "bling."

...
But, I agree, not too large and with blades a gentleman would use, like a file a nail cleaner and small spear and pen blades. Scissors wouldn't be out of place.

...
It's main distintion is that's not a working knife in strict terms, i.e. it has no pruning nor skinning blades, but is equipped for city environments.

...Something you could use to open a letter or cut your cigar with in a board meeting.

Clean, unobtrusive, not big, unassuming...... and generally made with the nicer materials.

To me, A gentleman's knife is on that when the girls see it they might make the remark of how nice it is or say that they would like to have one like that in their purse....

Is a Vic Classic a gentleman's knife? Would Alox covers be more gentlemanly than celidor??:confused:
I'd say yes to any Classic.

A clean, undamaged traditional (usually slipjoint) folder with fancy scales. It could be nacre, an exotic wood, stag, or even bone. Plastic scales in a subdued color like Case yellow could pass, but probably not bright primary colors, aluminum or machined composites....

Obviously, not everyone would agree with me! :D

For me an example is the Toothpick Small, elegant and up to most all cutting task encountered by a proper gentleman.

unfortunately i neither own one or have the link, but mr.dozier makes a very lovely gentleman's knife, fixed blade. perhaps not quite in the vein of this thread but i have viewed a few with gorgeous handle materials, and it's not so big as to be intimidating as long as you know who you're using it in front of; some will always find a fixed blade makes them nervous. curiously at times the same blade in a kitchen is fine. context i suppose
