What makes a knife go up in value?

On topic, though, I would say
that the Originals,
like U.S.A. made,
for an example,
when/if they have now been imported, the scarcity of them
add to their collectability, imo,
which would inturn fetch
a higher purchase price to another collector who recognizes and can appreciate the piece.
Particular knife makers, along with collaboration pieces.
Also, limited numbered runs,
limited sprint runs, and knives
that are discontinued / out of production are going to add to their rarity and collectability,
of-course, provided it was a quality made knife with
desirable
features.

It seems like many retailers will put knife models (Spyderco, ZT, etc) on sale that have been discontinued. This is probably one's best bet for making a couple bucks on a knife over time if it is a popular designer, good blade steel, etc.

That said, for investment you're probably better off with and Index fund.

That’s a good point. The only knives I have made money on were discontinued knives that I bought on clearance AND on Boxing Day/Black Friday. Kinda a 40-50% off plus an additional 10-20% thing. I still sold them for below what I could have got.

I have no time or interest in buying as many Sprints as I can and flipping them the next day like many do here. I hate to say it, it that’s likely the best way to make $$$ on knives.... by being a flipping dirtbag. :)

How good of a salesman are you? Personally, I suck at it.

That's the honest, on topic answer.

Johnny 2 Strokes: That's a question.

You beat me to it. It is all up to the seller’s ability and energy. A million dollar collection can sell for $100 if the seller just wants to get rid of it. It takes a lot of time and effort to understand each knife’s key selling points, then you have to enjoy the selling process and must have the ability to manage the transaction.
