What makes a trapper?

What's the thinking behind putting both blades at one end??
Might be thinking "Jack Knife"?
I forget the proper term for a knife with the blades at each end, like the canoe, moose, and muskrat (among others) patterns

Is there a practical design reason for putting blades at same or opposite ends to each other?

I'm thinking both blades at the same end is done when a knife handle is asymmetrical, that is one end is swelled a bit, etc. Take a full-sized Case Trapper for instance. The handle is more comfortable with the swelled end, thus both blades are mounted on the narrow end for precise control and feel of the knife in hand.

However it's classified, I love this "Small Locking Single Blade Bullet Mini Trapper". :D

A single blade version of the original Baby Bullet Trapper 1173 (1930's) two blades, spey and skinner. Reproduced as a both the 1173 (with skinner and spey) and as the 1173L single muskrat (Remington's term) lock blade in 1983. I have one I gave to my late Father in Law as a Christmas gift sometime in the 80's. I got it back when he passed away last year, great sized knife.

Knives with blades at both ends are called double-ended jacks, while same end two-blades are simply jacks. Double-end jacks are usually slimmer, as the thick tangs of the blades are at opposite ends and can use a single spring. Jacks often have longer blades for their frame size, and the handles can be shaped more ergonomically, with a larger butt, for more control.

This thread needs more pictures. :D
Comparison between the Case Trapper and Back Pocket...

I'll see your Backpocket + CV traper with my Backpocket + orange shotgun shell trapper!

M Mitt would you consider that 43 a backpocket or a trapper? I love mine in micarta either way
Mine being the frontier bone makes it a lot thicker than any of the other 43s. So with the frontier bones bulk and its size it could go either way.

I keep mine in a slip in my front pocket next to my phone. So for me at least I do consider it a trapper.
