what makes classifies a knife as a buschcraft or survival knife??

What you dont wan to spend 155 plus shipping on a knife of such high quality F&F? AND with such a great sheath?. I think they are charging 50 to 75 dollars too much for it, especially with that sheath.

yeah, this just might be that Big-"ish" knife I've been looking for, and that scandi grind is attractive aint it? :D

I don't know if you will be able to read this but this is from Tactical Knives Magazine....

Coyotebc is right Fonly, I don't think I would bother with the re-curve model but the Scrapper 6 is about the toughest knife for your money there is !!!
Anyone that wants a Scrapyard Blade though get in there fast cos there is a lot of hungry dogs in that yard !!!:D

Here is the notice from the Scrapyard....
OFFICIAL NOTICE

Dogs:

I will place the new Yard Hook and the Yard Guard up for sale tomorrow night, Thursday April 19, between 8:30 to 9:30 Central Time. Additionally, I will be posting the second run of Scrapper #6's at this time.

The Yard Hook features a 7” long blade of Scrap Yard SR 77 steel mated with a hand-filling, ergonomic Resiprene C handle. The Yard Hook is ready for heavy abuse in the harshest environment. The blade catch located in front of the integral thumb ramp provides an extra level of protection when the Yard Hook is deployed as a fighter. This wide body re-curved blade is equally effective in both a wilderness environment and a combat zone. The gentle re-curve of the primary edge has been proven throughout history to draw objects in towards the cutting edge.

The Yard Guard shares most of the features of its kissing cousin the Yard Hook. It does not feature a integral blade catch thus giving it a lower profile and making it less obtrusive for many camp side chores.

Specs for both knives:
Overall length - 12”
Blade length – 7”
Thickness – approximately .280 (1/4” – 5/16”)
Handle – Resiprene C
Steel – SR77
Price - $119.95

The Scrapper #6 sheath works for both of these knives. The Yard Hook rides a bit high (1/4 to 1/2) due to the catch (hook) riding on the liner of the sheath.
And this is the Scrapper 6...

The British MOD knife is pretty awfull, I agree with people when they say the knife on you is the one you will use, if its an emergencey that has sprung on you.
If your prepared I think a great mix is a good sized khukuri with a 13-14" blade weighing 23-26oz, and a modern bushcraft knife as used by people like Ray Mears.

We are going over old ground again here but most survival situations result from day hikes etc that go wrong more often than from equipped expeditions etc. For a simple day hike very few people are going to take a Khukuri and are most likely to have with them a 4-5" blade.
Also as somebody else has already said far better than I can,it also depends on your location, climate and time of the year etc.
In North America I don't think a Khukuri would be the ideal choice, I think a medium fixed blade and an axe would be far better. In a jungle a machete or parang would be more suited!!!
And when you say the MOD 4 is " pretty Awfull " what exactly do you mean ? Do you mean you are judging it on looks ? I have used this knife hard and know that it does what it says on the box and does it well...what more can you ask of a knife ? I agree it does not look like a Busse but if it did I expect I would have it displayed on a cupboard gathering dust because I wouldn't want to mess it up !!!!;)

I guess our experiences are different, but I have used the MOD knife and found it to be a poor large blade, also most of the British Army guys I have come across hate it, and carry their own stuff, which seems to vary greatly.
Well I would say that around Bremerton the khukuri is just fine, and in the Jungle I found it worked real well.

Yoshi I am not trying to argue with you but could you please expand on what you mean by it being a poor large blade !
I will readily admit that if I were Fonly and looking for a heavy duty knife I would snap a SYKW Scrapper 6 up as soon as they go on sale but I still cannot understand what is wrong with the MOD 4's ?

what is wrong with the MOD 4's ?
As I look at the photo of this knife above...
Yes, it is a big stong, heavy knife.
But that might be what a guy might be looking for.

In that case...
To make it more in-line with what I think a modern Survival knife sould look like, I would grind the guard off.
The guard is in the way, and limits the things you can do with the knife and the places where it can reach into.

I also would find a different sheath to hold this knife.
I never liked this sheath design. On a true survival knife such a leather/rivets combo is asking for trouble.
And a survival knife should not be left to one snap to hold in position.

At $120, I would buy that ScrapYard in a heartbeat over the MOD4 at a similar price. The SY looks like it's actually done being made, if you know what I mean.

However, if I found a great deal on a MOD4, I'd snatch it up, convex that sabre grind out of it so it would cut better, and finish the handle. Certainly the steel gives you a lot to work with and I like modding knives like that. You can easily make a knife like that sharper, pretty hard to make a weak one stronger :D
