What makes for a good file?

There's a lot of "tools" out there that are pretty much useless. I bought this set of files years ago, haven't really used them much, let alone for knifemaking. They're sold as Power Fist brand by Princess Auto, and it seems the same files are available at Harbour Freight under the Central Forge brand. I don't know if they are any good or not, or what to look for in a good file. Should I just go ahead and use them, or will I save myself a lot of grief by replacing them with some particular other kind, and what should I look for?

edit: They are about 10" long not counting handles.

By all means use them. From the "Sound" of your experience...you have so much more to worry about rather than a mere set of files... *Wink*
Do it up & Run it!

Harbor freight files are mostly worthless, sears craftsman brand files are OK, Nicholson Files are excellent, Simmonds files are hit-or-miss, some are great, some suck

It all comes down to what you plan to do with them. If you are a knifemaker or aspire to be one a good set of files is priceless. If you are just going to use them for household chores once or twice a year then what you have is fine.

I have a set of those files. I think I payed the same for the whole set as I would for a large nicholson bastard.

They will work, but they dont cut as easily. Its like using a half dull quality file.
