What Makes Spyderco so Good?

Spyderco is an excellent company.....unfortunately, for all the claims of "ergos", none of the 10 or so models I've handled (including my Endura) really fit my hand well. It's a shame, because they are well made, high quality knives.

Hi Pharce, Can you explain what issues you are having? Please be as specific as possible.

Spyderco egros are really good; however, there's a part which i do not really like- the handle hump. Almost all of spyderco handles have this hump where the middle, and fourth figer rests on. Emerson CQC13 has that part of the handle curved inwards instead, and it's perfectly comfortable for me. But I guess everyone has their own preferences, so oh well...
Back to the topic: Spyderco knives give you ALOT of options. Need a small knife, get a dragonfly. Need a large one, get a military. Somewhere in between? Manix2 or a paramilitary2. Want something impressive? The Navaja. Rust proof knives? They have it!

my friend claims that he has heard that SOG are better than Spyderco,

At this point, I'm not sure there is much you can do for your friend :)

I guess it all comes down to what is important to you in a pocket knife. Using higher end steels, handle materials, superior QC (for everything from fit/finish to optimum consistent hardening), constantly trying out new purpose-built designs in both blades and handles, and proving your knives with some of the highest standards of testing in the production-knife world are all important to me.

If I had to guess, I'd say that easily more than half of the owners of pocket knives just buy what looks cool and either abuse them in a way they're not supposed to be used or never actually use them to their potential - so there are very few folks out there who are actually qualified to say which knife is "better". On this forum, its different because making wild statements about how one knife is better than another will earn a hale of responses with facts and statements of use as opposed to "what my daddy told me".

So you might actually never convince him which is better - but you can point him in the right direction and see what he has to say once he's an owner - I find that many used-to-be-Spyderco-haters are now owners of several of their knives.

See Sal's humble request for honest feedback above. THAT'S what makes 'em so good.

Plus one on this! I think that it is awesome that Sal is in here trying to get feedback! I love them and have wanted one since I went to the county fair in Sacramento in '94, I think it was when I saw them, but the price was too much for a Middle school kid with no job. My dad would have bought it for me if I had the money though. I finally bought one and then another one within less than a week....I am addicted more now! Thanks Sal for making such a great knife and making them better every year!

I have never owned a Spyderco knife, but I've seen a few. They are definitely well made. They just look a little weird to me. Although, the way I collect knives I will probably have one sooner or later.

This is how many of us started out. I avoided Spyderco for a good year because their looks. Then I got my hands on a Manix and and a Paramilitary and immediately wanted to slap myself for waiting.

Which models were they?
