I asked this in another thread - thought I would start a separate one...

What makes the police model well suited for police use? What makes the millitary suited for millitary use?

The same thing that makes a Ladybug suitable for carry by actual ladybugs. Nothing. :)

well, since i often carry one on duty, i can tell you what i like:

-long cutting edge, the 4" blade is actually our policy limit.
-slim and light.
-solid lock.
-black scales/clip dont reflect light (i would love a black blade).
-broad tip, with moderate distal taper, should the need arise to pry.
(i have a small pry bar, but in emergent situations, i may have to use a knife)
-relatively inexpensive, at least compared to my other knives.
-comfortable grip.
-easy to sharpen.
-easy to open.
-ambidextrous.

and mine doesn't say "police" anywhere on the knife.

would absolutely luv a black blade too...
the po po makes a great carry because it has a nice blade length, along with a slim tough body which doubles up as an impacting tool.
but you know; come to think of it, a mirror polished finish (bright chromed) would be bling enough to command some healthy street respect ;-)

i am the epitomy of "anti-bling". :D

yes, i guess it would make a fine impact weapon as well.

What makes the Police such a great impact tool? I don't see how its build makes it any better than other models of similar class.

its not better or worse than any other knife of similar size, just another attribute it has.

I'm glad the new Police models have black handles. Why any officer would want a slippery shiny stainless steel knife blade and handle is beyond me.

Both reflective and slippery handles are far overplayed...unless you are a wet work ninja.

The handle is well designed for retention.

If one was using it at night, far less silvery metal would be visible than on a stainless steel service pistol.

I really can't come up with a lawful scenario where a policeman needs to have a blade out where the reflection is going to give him away.

i wouldn't carry a stainless pistol.

i work nights, so more peace of mind than anything. i try to wear the least amount of reflective stuff i can. if i could get away with a subdued badge, i would. and you never know when you'll have to use a particular tool.

Most LEOs I know carry a Delica or an Endura. The original Police with SS handle is a too slippy.

Have you ever actually used one? You see the Police model is one of the longest selling designs for Spyderco. If too many incidents happened from slippy handles (see my avatar) than frankly the design wouldn't sell.

Now I find the new G-10 Police an improvement, and it does add more grip. But, the "too slippy" of SS with the Police design is nonsense. ;)

"One of the longest selling designs" proves nothing about how slippery a SS handle is. Nor does it address why more police AND more people overall choose to carry the D+E rather than a Police model. If it is more slippery, than it is "too slippery" for some people. The addition of G-10 would make it "more" suited for police. You wouldn't find many police officers that would want to carry a duty weapon with sterile SS grips. :jerkit: Too slippery.

I can tell you using both my SS handled Endura and Police models I've never had slipping issues, even with slightly damp hands.

I do however hope to get my hands on one of those new G10 Police models though...

However, being I work in a cutlery retailer I've met numerous police officers who carry the SS Police. And some with SS Enduras and Delicas.
