What makes your knife your own?

I buy new so that every scratch and stain is a mark of my adventures with it.

+1 I like to make my own "history" with the knife.

Also, there are some knives that I really liked at first, but after some real use I discovered things that I didn't like, like the too short handle on the BK-14.
Its still a good knife, but I don't use it that often anymore.

So I guess really using a knife makes it mine, dulling it and sharpening it for the first time.
