What materials to use for a first knife?

I am getting ready to make my first knife, and I have no idea what materials and tools to use. so far, all I know is that I want to cut the knife out using this template,

I like the pattern, and that's half the battle.
Go to shop talk for information. Surfing around in there will get you everything you need to know to get started, and once you know a few things it's a great place to ask questions. I've found the search function of this website to be extremely useful as well.
 
Read everything the count linked you to and like someone else mentioned it depends on what you are looking to do. If you're going to try heat treating it yourself something like 1084 is very forgiving and easy to work with, with minimal equipment both before and after the HT. Doesn't mean it won't make a great knife so don't make that assumption. If you plan on having the HT done professionally then you can use basically anything you want in regards to a known knife steel. All steels have different advantages and disadvantages it depends on what you're looking for in a blade.

I just recently made my first knife, I used
An old lawn mower blade for material, I heat
Treated it and tempered it,sharpened it myself..
It came out pretty good..shaves the hair off my
Arm..you can use old leaf springs for material,old
Files..there are some videos on you tube you can
