What Multi-tool do you carry in the Field?

Just wanted to see how many of you out there carry a multi-tool in the field and what model/brand and do you prefer a locking tool or not. I carry a PST II but have been considering a PULSE.

Thanks,
Colt

I use a classic Leatherman and a SAK, I don't know which model it is but it has a couple of things the Leatherman doesn't. I have thought of getting one that has it all, but it is low on my priority list for now. Between the two I carry, I have eveything but a small wood saw; which I would like. I know that some time down the road I will get something else so I am glad you started this thread so I can see what is out there.

Got my Pulse last night. Very nice. It's going to be an every day carry for me. All the tools lock. It has a good pair of scissors, comfy grip, and it's as solid as their original. At 6 oz, it ain't gonna kill ya to carry either. I'm extremely happy they brought this tool out. It's basically a PST II but with locking tools and a more ergo handle.

I had a Gerber for many years, and got quite attached to it. It's looser than a leatherman, but easier on the hands and quicker to deploy. It walked off with some other guy though...

Now I carry a Swisstool. It deploys with similar speed to a leatherman, but is more comfortable and feels more substantial. My complaints are that it is large, and the locking mechanism seems it could be difficult to work. In reality, I've never had a problem working it, wet, gloved, cold, oily, etc.

I have a Leatherman Wave. I prefer it over the SAKs. I am happy with its weight and very happy with the combination of tools it offers. The plain and serrated knife blades as well as the saw and the diamond sharpener/file are lockable and of adequate length.
Only thing I should improve: one screw is too tight with one set of tools.
Still, it seems to be the ideal combination of tools for me.

LM Wave and SAK (tinker)...these are my daily carries I never leave the house without either one kinda like my watch.

Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get me.

A multi-tool, SAK and a knife are on my person about as often as pants. In the field, my Wave takes a day off and the SuperTool steps in and I swap the Spartan ofr a Rucksack. The Knife de jour will be determined based upon intednded uses for that day. In the field I prefer fixed blades.

Because the Rucksack already has an excellant saw, I will sometimes take the original PST due to weight/size.

Though I already have a gaggle of Leathermans (Leathermen?) I see a Pulse in my future.

SwssToolX, just got one. It is a bit large, but the quality is excellent and the scissors equally excellent. Has the small saw blade as well.

Leatherman WAVE. No pinched hands, perfect size, just enough tools whithout going to far.Probably the most comfortable handle on a multi tool I myself have ever felt.

I've really enjoyed my swiss tool. Fit and finish can't be beat and the locking design and overall design is the best on the market, IMO. But here's my only complaint. Look closely and you will see that the flat-bladed screwdrivers have rounded corners. As an exmechanic, I can tell you that this is not the way quality screwdrivers are designed. Good screw drivers have square edges. Look at any SnapOn, Mac, Proto, etc and that's what you will see. The SAKs are not as rounded as some of the gerbers I've seen but nevertheless, they have a roundness to them. In contrast, all the Leathermans I've handled have square edges. These guys KNOW how to make a flat bladed screwdriver. The blade needs to sit flush in the slot across the entire width of the blade. Ideally, they should show minimal tapering at the very tip, as well.

The good news is that you can regrind your SAK blades. It will take off the shininess but you have a better screwdriver and strip out less screw heads if you gride the blades square.

BTW, my Pulse is PULSATING! Light and handy, and rugged as the original.

I'm a HVAC service tech. and I've tried many different brands. For me it's a gerber, hands down! why? It comes out fast and with one hand. The first one I had didn't lock, so when they made one that did I bought it. I've always got two knives in my pocket so I don't use the blades. That way I always have a razor sharp knife at all times. If it broke today I'd buy another tommorrow.

Tim Leatherman rules the multitool world, IMO.

I carry a WAVE. I tried multitools by SOG, Fiskars/Gerber, and a SwissTool, but the WAVE was my favorite in terms of comfort, features, design, and craftsmanship. As for weight, it's one of the heavier multitools for its size, but I'm not about to sacrifice any of the qualities I mentioned above over a few ounces difference in weight. I buy the best knives I can afford and look elsewhere amongst my gear to save weight.

I DO NOT CHOOSE TO BE A COMMON MAN

"It is my right to be uncommon...if I can; I seek opportunity...not security. I do not wish to be a kept citizen, humbled and dulled by having the state look after me. I want to take the calculated risk; to dream and to build, to fail and to succeed. I refuse to barter incentive for a dole. I prefer the challenges of life to the guaranteed existence; the thrill of fulfillment to the stole calm of utopia. I will not trade freedom for beneficence nor my dignity for a handout. I will never cower before any master nor bend to any threat. It is my heritage to stand erect, proud, and unafraid; to think and act for myself; enjoy the benefits of my creations and to face the world boldly and say,
This I have done, and this is what it means to be an American."

Leatherman Wave, has everything I need and comfy grip. I am haveing a kydex sheath made for it just to see what I think. Don't know if i am going to like it, but I'll give it a try.

Could depend on what you mean by "in the field." I work as a Web programmer in a business office, so an office environment is my field, I guess.

Anyway, I carry a Victorinox Craftsman in my front pocket and an original Leatherman PST in a black nylon sheath with belt clip.

I've asked my wife for the Leatherman Wave (among other things) for Christmas. We shall see.
