What Multi-tool do you carry in the Field?

I've been going "smaller and lighter", and have decided that the weight of a Leatherman PST is as much as I want to deal with. For multitools this size, I don't think anything can touch the Pulse -- with the caveat that I haven't handled one yet!. But my current carry is a PST II, so the Pulse, which is a PST II with locking tools and more comfy handles, should be perfect.

Wave is too heavy, Swisstool is way too heavy, Gerber is too heavy (plus its best feature, one-handed pliers, is great around work/home but less useful around camp).

Only downside to the pulse is lack of a saw. I don't really use a saw, but admit it would be nice to have one. If a saw is a must, I'd be looking closely at the Swisstool, Wave, and perhaps one of the new Gerbers. The Wave is what I use at home, but I really really wish it had externally-accessible screwdrivers, the way the Swisstool does.

Well,

Not much new to add.

I carry a Swiss Tool. Heavy, but I like the tools and access to them.

New addition is going to be a Vnox Pioneer, alox handles, key ring, main blade, awl, saw, screwdriver/caplifter. can-opener/screwdriver. It should fit the minimal size role great.

Joe,
Yup, no wood saw on the pulse

but it does have a metal saw on the file.

When I go in woods, camping or hunting, I'll take the bigger tool and carry it in a sheath (unless backpacking--then small is better). But for every day carry, I can live without the saw I guess. There's only so much room in one of those babies and still keep it small enough to be comfortable in a pocket. The Wave is 2 oz more than the pulse and a good coatpocket tool. The SAK I've been carrying in my backpack everyday, along with a maglite.

I own a Leatherman PST II, Wave, and Supertool, and a Victorinox Swisstool. Every one has its pluses and minuses, but for carry on the belt, I like the Wave. I wish the PST, Supertool, and Pulse came with appropriately-sized leather sheaths shaped like the Wave's, which is the only multi-tool sheath I feel comfortable with.

Been thinking of a Pulse. There's only one thing besides a wood saw I'd like added onto it...a medium-small screwdriver. The Wave is the only large LM tool that has one. Also, it may be just me, but I find the LM can opener could be modified to cut more cleanly.

The Wave's weight doesn't bother me, probably because the tool is very compact for its weight, and except for a bit of "looseness" in the handles, it's great.

Sorry Nimrod but it has to be GREATER than 25 to light up and this should just...about... do it.

Just got a Bucklite tool today at a pawn shop for $20 in excellent condition (it's perfect except it has no sheath) I like it a lot it's lighter than my LM Wave and has a punch on it. I think I'll start carring this one (when I get a sheath) and leaving my wave for at work and in my pack.

Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get me.

I have a Leatherman PST II which I use when out in the woods or higher up.
The scissors are great for cutting
nose hairs and toe nails one of those boring ours in the tent. In fact you might go berserk. If you have a look around, there are a lot of things screaming for a scissor job.
Last year I forgot my PST on a rock three days walk up in the mountains.
This year I had a succesful rescue operation.
The reunion was a sight for sore eyes.
We love each other even more now.
I'll let you know when the "true story" comes to a cinema near you.

I have had a Gerber Multipliers since its inception. My first model is even marked as First Production Run. I really like it. Along with it I have carried a SAK for years. My latest, for work especially, is the Cyber tool.

Yaaay! The Cybertool rocks! Now I want the 41, but I'd have to find a good home for the 34 that I bought awhile ago. What better way to adjust the pivot on your Benchmade or Spyderco (and others too) in the field than the Cybertool. It's replaced my 20 year old Explorer as the daily carry.

Sorry, but I don't have an experienced opinion on multitools; I have (please don't flame) a Bucktool, which is okay except when you need to twist on the pliers. I got it because I liked the smooth handles. I normally don't carry a multitool because I don't use it that often and don't like the weight. I'd probably buy a Wave or a Swisstool if I wanted one now.

Actually, I like the Swiss Tool very much. My only complaint is that it is a bit heavy.
The Gerber multi-tool is all right too. Actually, most of the tools are almost never used but it's nice knowing that they are there.
One never know when they will come in useful.

I've carried a Wave for the past six months and its doing great. I've carried SAK Huntsman's for years and will continue to do so - they could throw one in my coffin, just in case?!

I've had earlier Leathermans, Gerbers and a SOG Paratool and never used them much. The Wave however is better by design and that is why I'm useing it a whole lot more.
If I am going to carry a fixed blade or tough folder then I go with the SAK. Frankly, the multitools are no substitute for a good toolbox. Which means a simple SAK is all that one needs to carry, because if you can't fix it with that then you'll be getting out the toolbox anyway: for spanners, hammers, wrenches and screwdrivers. Murphy says one pair of pliers is never enough - you need at least a spanner, or even better a pair, and then one needs to be short

Happy new year everyone, the best of health for 2001.

Tired of the leather this leather that. Schrade Tough Tool. Leatherman had to create the wave to catch up to this multi tool.

i carry a gerber multi plier. one that i choose the components from off of theie'build your own' site. i have had most of the multi tools on the market since i first saw the leatherman at the '87 shot show. carried different leatherman models mostly, but i really like the fact that the gerber has a jig for conv. jigsaw blades. i carry a couple of spare blades. that remgrit blade is pretty cool.

I carry a wave on my belt every day, with the little maglite.I modified mine so it opens with one hand, took it apart, filed it,and added a nylon washer on each pivot, works great.gotta be careful to leave some tension on the handles or the pliers won't work right. hence the nylon.one handed knives are great if you're right handed, since I'm not I'm looking at a pulse or gerber.my pst2 rides in my SH-E sheath

I actually bought a Schrade Tough tool last month. I was very unimpressed. I gave it to my wife. She promptly lost it.
I got a Swiss Tool for X-Mas and it is much, much nicer. Of all the multi-tools I have used it has by far the best fit and finish as well as the best locking mechanism.
I have been carrying it in a horizontal sheath in civilian clothing every day (to back up my MT LCC)
At work a Wave rides on my belt, still love it. (With a Spyderco Military in my thigh pocket)
Get a quality tool and you can't go wrong.
stay sharp,
