Hello ,fellow CRK owners
After many years of just carrying my leatherman tools. And just using the knives on those . I decided to get a dedicated folder . Started with a manix 2 loved it , then got a paramilitary 2 again loved it . Got the bug kept buying more, zero tolerance and such . All fore mentioned are awesome knives . Began trolling the net reading and learning about knives . The chris reeves line seem to stand out . Although it wasn't everybody's cup of tea . The quality was never an issue . Ok so on to why I wanted one . I was born in 1967 and lived through the transition from the old America into the new . Was raised by my great grandfather who was born in 1900 . He was an eagle scout in 1915 . I have always had a love for "things" . And marveled at the things he had . They were old but they were quality . This man had shoes from the 40's that he still wore and would take to the cobbler to be repaired . His beautiful straight razor , stamped x company , Chicago IL. You get where I'm coming from . Things that were made with pride in america . Hell even the toys from that Era were quality and stamped . As I grew older and we became a cheap throw away society and we're sold cheap Chinese crap with no soul . No pride of manufacturing, just thrown together to make money . Let's face it though you can't get around it nowadays . Most things you own are coming from China . Ok I have to accept that . But I do draw the line at certain items . That I want american made and will pay a premium. Shoes , boots , tools , guitars and such . Things that are built with quality and pride , beyond the profit margin. Things that can be handed down to your children . Can I get a Chinese piece of crap for 50 dollars that'll cut as well ? Yes . But there's an intangible missing, I'll call that the soul. And of coarse lesser quality . Sooooooo in conclusion was my sebenza 21 w/gabon ebony inlays I received today , worth $485.00? to me it was , it's worh more than 10,000 Chinese pieces of crap, ....it has "soul"....

Very well said, I think you are spot on with the "soul".

I feel a sort of kinship with my CRK's that I have not felt with any other folder. It may be foolhardy romantic nolstalgia but that doesn't make it any less real to me.

Excellent synopsis of that je ne sais quoi that is the Sebenza.

Good boots are dang important also, have to look after your feet.

Yupp I can relate to your story and how you feel about quality items. I can't stand items that are basically garbage right off the assembly line. Love my 21 as well.

Thanx y'all for the kind words . I would love to also hear your feeling on why you bought a 4-5 hundred dollar folder . Also I'd like to clarify something . I don't mean to offend people who own and love ,Chinese folders . If that does it for you then great . I'm not a snob . I have a very modest income , I had to save for this knife . Like I stated it's not everyone's cup of tea . But it was worth it to me . And the remarks on "Chinese pieces of crap" are my personal opinions.

Also ... and don't tell chris reeve ... after a couple hours of practice I can now flick this puppy out as fast as my paramilitary 2 ... oh yeah!!

The Sebenza was my 1st higher end folder and a large jump up. I have been into knives since I was a kid(many, many, many) years ago. Around 2008 I decided I wanted something special to carry. It was my small Blackwwod Classic MM that I had them make for me. I latter sold it, but have since retrieved it.

I'm glad you retrieved it . I had an experience with my Gibson acoustic . That I love and saved for . I got a hair up my but and traded it in on something else . A couple of days went by and I was like, what the hell did you just do . Raced up to the store and my beauty was hanging on the wall , with a price tag attached . The feeling was unbearable. Grabbed it ,so relived no one bought it . Her and I haven't parted since .

I bought all of them for my kid. It's too bad (for him) that he is only two years old...:D.

Seriously though, I own three with a special "birthdate". Those will for sure be passed down to my kids. Two are safe queens and one gets used hard by me. I do have others as well.

"A knife in a pocket is to him what a diamond around the neck is to her". Think of it like that and this is a cheap hobby.

Oh, I'd be surprised if most of us here didn't share your opinion of cheap folders.

Welcome to BF and the sickness!!

My first was also a small Blackwood Classic. It's come back home to Momma twice now.

You did a good job of distinguishing between the two. Recognizing this distinction is essential when trying to understand why some people love Sebenzas, and other people not so much. And when we don't recognize the difference between utility and "soul", we get grumpy and start squabbling because we are speaking two different languages. One guy will say, "this is the best knife ever." And the other, "all it does is cut stuff." They may both be right, but they are talking about two different things.

Panzeron, you're in good company here. I've been collecting moderate to high-end knives for over 25 years, just recently getting my first CRK's, and you are spot-on about their soul. It is an intangible that is indeed palpable to anyone who appreciates quality and pride of craftsmanship over bargains and profit-margins.

I love and appreciate my CRK's in a way that I've never felt for any other knives. I'm certain there are other quality knife makers that have similar sentiments felt about their knives as well.

I enjoy my other collected knives as well; Spyderco, Benchmade, Emerson, Piranha, Microtech... they are beautiful in their own ways. But for me, CRK's are not just knives... they are a part of me. :)

Wow , I love y'alls comments. Y'all absolutely get it . I love the comment by powernoodle , some one who argues that his 50 dollar knife cuts as good . And wonders why I paid what I did . He's not wrong . We are talking about two different things .

I agree, and could not have said it any better myself. Like you all, I feel a very close tie to my CRK's because of the soul put into them in Boise, ID.

panzeron, you've found a Great group of guys and gals here. We all get it.....some a lot more than we should judging by the # of CRK's we have.

I have some Spydies that I carry once in a while for a change, but not for more than a day. Some of us have customs that aren't in the same class as

CRK's....My CRK's are carried/used almost daily, the customs I have not so much. They don't have the soul of the knives we all like best!
