what new hunting riffle

I usually don't enter many gun threads. Everybody has their favorite. And for various reasons, they are all probably right.
But since you are only one state away. Plus you like lever guns. I figured why not.

If you like lever guns, why not move to a Marlin. Easy to scope, and same style. If you haven't tried it. The new Leverevolution ammo from Hornady is pretty impressive.

If your sights are set on a bolt gun. I don't have the Ruger American Compact. But I have two Ruger Frontiers. Same compact set-up. The two main differences are wood stocks, and the ability to mount a Scout Scope.

I have one in .243 and one in 7mm-.08. Both setup in the scout style. Our terrain sounds similar to yours. Seeing more than 100 yards, let alone shooting that far is rare. The lower magnification, and quick target acquisition of the scout platform has its advantages in close in brushy terrain.

The Scout platform isn't for everyone. Some love it, some hate it. I love it. If I was out in Colorado or Wyoming where long shots are the norm. Then that might be a different story.

Just some food for thought.
