I have decided that my next knife is going to be my new Primary Deffensive folder, So i am looking for advice since i am not able to handle all of the Knives that i am interested in

First: MOD Duane Dieter, pros: Spearpoint with nice false edge, long handle, AL handle with inserts, Cons: Expensive, Not sure about button locks, rather unPC (maybe a pro not sure.

Second: MT Soccom Elite, Pros: MT quality, my friend has one and i love his. Cons: getting hard to find, finger choil leaves something to be desired.

Third: BM Axis AFCK, pros: I like axis locks, i like the ergos of the AFCK, D2, rather Economical. Cons: Chris thinks they accidentally dissengage, AFCK's tend to be flexy, BM QC can be poor.

Fourth: Spyderco Gunting, pros: compression lock, Gunting Divice, spear point blade. Cons: blade length (if it was 3.5 in i wouldnt have to write this post since the gunting would be my choice)

Fith: Emerson Commander. Pros: Wave, handle ergonomics. Cons: Not very pointy, linner lock, thumb disk, 98's are better.

Sixth: Emerson SOCFK. pros: wave, ergonomics. Cons, shortish blade, chisel gring, linner lock.

So these are my choices. Any others that i should strongly consider (not interested in REKAT sorry glockman99) basically i would like to know what your thoughts are on these knives. I have big hands, great finger dexterity, i favour saber grip, and i am familiar with grappeling.

Lock strength, Blade Shape, QC ect.

thanks guys.

I am not a weapons master, so I'll give one guys 2 cents on some of the knives you listed as a knife freek
The MOD Dieter (don't own one) but handled one and they are a very good knife. Little $$$$ expensive.

I would look real hard at the BM Axis AFCK. BM has had some QC problems in the past but the knife is a great design. I perfer holes over studs or disks. Plus, the Axis lock is great.

I do own a Commader and it is a good knife but I was a little disappointed when I got it in a trade. Mine is a 2000 model with a wave (which is cool, unless your a pair of jeans) but the liner is WAY to thin. The SOFCK is pretty good although I think blade is a little short for my tastes ( I prefer atleast 4 inches and anything bigger is better, love my SIFU ;)) To my knowledge (please don't quote) both are chisel ground which I don't really like, I personally haven't figured out how to re-sharpen them.

If you like the Gunting, and you mentioned you have grappling experience, which if I understand correctly this knife works well for I'd go with that. Spyderco makes a great knife. I have an Endura that power tools can't stand up to and one of my favorite knives is my Civilan. Either the BM Axis or the Gunting for the $$$ they would be hard to top.
Just 2 cents
:p

First off cant you obtain a ccw for a gun in N.H.?
Second, there is way to much hand wringing over what defensive folder is just right. While a knife has very limited self defense capabilities, most heavy duty quality folders will handle the job. I agree Chris C. is da man no argument, but he says he doesn't like the axis lock because he says it might fail or be released accidentally. I have yet to see a report of this happening. He does however seem to like folders with liner locks that we know for a fact have failed and closed up on people. So go figure. Also almost all folders lack a guard which makes any kind of "stab" into any material risky. Better make sure the material is soft all the way through. I would not like the axis as a mud and blood survival folder though. I would want something easier to clean up, with no chance of crud still being left inside. Same for the rekat rolling lock. Those are city knives only.

I at times carry the benchmade 730 Ares axis lock, Spyderco Chinook, New style Endura, Calypso, Rekat Sifu, Syderco Civilian, and Large Cold Steel Voyager All have proven themselves very capable to me.

Of the choices you list I think the BM-710 is the runaway winner. If I had one I would carry it, but for now will stick with the Chinook if forced to pick just one out of the middle of the pack. Like the new style endura an awful lot though. Your mileage may vary.

The MT SOCOM is the highest qualty knife you listed IMHO, the Commander is cool too (wave baby, yeah!)

Allow me to add one.

CRKT Kasper KFF. THe steel is good for EDC (AUS-8), the handles are great for security in a natural grip, and you get a ncie wide blade... think wound channels here. The blade is a liner lock, but it has the LAWKS syste,. Gaucho, a martial artist who tests blades like Hossom's swords and such, tested the aus-6/zytel version and posted the info on Knifeforums I think. This should prove to be a great defensive folder.

There is going to be a special edition LE MOD Duane Dieter. It cost a little more and the false edge is sharpened. Some one posted pics of this special version on this forum a week or two ago. I would get this MOD. I have the Socom Elite and I highly recommend it also.

I recommend the MT SOCOM Elite model. Very good workmanship, a reliable lock and a great handle/blade design!

The CRK&T Crawford/Kasper folder (large) is also in my opinion a good alternative.

thanks for all the responses guys, i think i want a MOD so maybe later i will get a Duane Dieter, maybe the small one. Right now i am leaning towards the SOCOM, i like the KFF, but i think that i would have to get the custom version.

Anyone know where i can find a SOCOM?

FYI,

there is a clip point Emerson SOCFK.

now then, give any thought to a Spyderco Chinook? i'm gettin one of these for Christmas (ho ho ho) so I can't tell you from personal experience yet, but it looks like almost the perfect fighting/hard use utility folder (and that 3.75" blade is prolly long enough).

I'd second that motion on the Keeting Chinook. They seem to be built pretty well, have a spydi hole:D and a decent size blade. Something else to look at might be the Al-Mar Sere 2000. I picked one up at a local shop and it's made very well. The spear point blade looks really good.

Also, they are BIG & WIDE, but I love my Buck/Strider. If a knife could be a car then the Buck/Strider would wear a Peterbult emblem.

There are just SO many awesome tactical knives to choose from. I am not schooled enough to make a specific suggestion but just add two more to consider. A protech TR3 SWAT. Yeah, I know it is an auto knife, but for "Tactical purpose" an auto works very well in combo with many other blades that should be found on your body. dollar for dollar, the Tactical Respone III is a pretty hi-grade Production piece that opens with authority, has zero blade play, and a very well made blade. the aluminum COULD have been canned for something else;) but THAT is what it is and with a little bit of "modification" one can make it "very grippy"
Just another one of the nice tactical folders out there.
Visit the Dalton talk on the auto thread. NOW for pure Tactical, look at the SOBI. THERE, I would love to continue this topic.......wolf;)

I would reccomend the CQD MKII without a doubt. This is an awesome knife and totally under-rated.

Do a search of CQD with my name in the username section, I have commented many times on my opinion of them and have owned several. Still own 2 of them :)

I do have a custom KFF and IMO it is unbelievable  I carry it all the time when I'm in casual clothes.

Bladeart.com has the small KFF with a spyderhole on clearance right now for $299, an unbeatable price...

LizardKing,

My suggestion is the Spyderco Civilian,it was made for one thing.Plus if you pull it out to show it to someone it's fun to see how far their eyes bug out of their head.

MT Socom Elite is a great choice, but is out of production and becoming hard to find.

Let me make another suggestion: BM 710 in any of it's various configurations. A good, solid overall design with the Axis lock.

I found a store that carries MOD!!

And i HATED THEM! well they didnt have the CQD, but they had the rest and they were junk! gritty, slow action, thin linners and the worst part, some of them DIDNT lock when i opened them, they had to be BANGED OPEN, maybe Mod should stick to writting Bios of the people that design their knives.

I do like the CHinook, might buy one someday, but the lockback is just not my cup of tea, i do like the clip point temperance that is a sort of MiniChinook

wolfmann601 What is a SOBI?

i am going to get a civi, probably wont carry it everyday, it would most likely just sit on display since i feel it is a rather impressive peice.

Thanks for the responses guys

Any particular reason you haven't picked the Al Mar SERE 2000?

If you could handle one, I would think it would be on your list.

What about the Microtech MA LCC?

Very high quality liner lock. I prefer the earlier version with Ti bolsters rather than the new aluminum bolsters (appearance only). The carbon fiber scales have some texture and are not slippery.

The Chinook if you use reverse grip technique, although the LCC is not uncomfortable that way, just not as solid.
