What next....traditional or spydie?

I'm trying to decide which direction to go with my next few knives here:

I'm really getting curious about spydies (never owned one or handled one) and traditionals. I've never really used or carried either. My current collection (15-20) consists mostly of user kershaws that I love, a couple of Ontarios, and a few Mora carving knives. I use my Ontario rat 1 and 3 pretty heavily, cutting rough materials at work and in soil, dirt, and grime. The other knives aren't used quite as heavily, but still outdoors for whatever I need. I'm a landscaper, my knives are tools, I dull them, resharpen them, and repeat.

Which one should I buy next? Why? I'm more inclined to try out a few traditionals next, but I've always been a big knife guy, and I'm not sure if any traditionals are going to click with me.
I'm sure I will love a spyderco if I buy one, but that's just adding another knife that serves the same function as the rest of my collection.

Convince me which is better for me and my needs! I will most definitely be using whatever knife I buy, all my knives are users.

I like diversity. I would buy whichever is most UNlike the other knives I have.

A few knives that have really caught my eye lately have been
Opinel #9 slimline
Any sodbuster style like the gec bull buster
Gec #42....never owned anything like it but it looks amazing
And the spyderco endura

The bull buster and 42 pattern from GEC are both excellent choices. I have a BB inbound with micarta covers. Im very much looking forward to it.

Don't buy a Spyderco. Otherwise you may keep buying them and develop a financially unhealthy addiction. You've been warned.

Agree. These are excellent work knives of a 'traditional' nature. Knives Ship Free have the Bull Buster atm, for a good price. Snag one, you won't regret it.

One of my favorite knives is the Case Back Pocket in G10 , it's sort of a cross over of traditional and modern.

Another is the Queen Mountain Man , but I carry the Case more.

Your collection will continue to evolve, worry not, you'll end up with both

I figured this would happen. I'm convinced....my next one will be a traditional. I'm holding off until I go to a gun show next weekend....hoping I'll find a nice user there. After that I think I'm going to look at the bull buster.....seems like a good place to start and literally everybody has something good to say about them.

I really like the 42 and back pocket models too....but I'll start a little cheaper.

Keep it simple. For a little over 100 bucks you can get both a nice basic Case medium Stockman and a Spyderco Delica.

Have choices. With the Case you can choose either stainless or carbon steel and a wide choice of handle materials and designs. With the Delica you can choose various color handles or having serrations or plain edge.

I avoided Spydercos like the plague for years. The Spyderhole left me cold . . . until I tried it, that is. I still have a love/hate relationship with Spydercos. The hole tends to add a lot more real estate to Spyderco blades than I like. But for a non-flipper, the Spyderhole has become my favorite blade-opening mechanism. I vastly prefer it to thumbstuds.

Traditionals (primarily slipjoints) are a whole other world. Some of my favorite folders are slipjoints. If you use your slipjoints as they're meant to be used, they're just as safe as knives that incorporate locks. Just remember . . . pull, don't push! ;)

Have fun making up your mind. :)

I can carry pretty much whatever i want and the Spyderco Military is in my pocket more than others.

It's one of the very best slicers out there...i wouldn't dig out sprinkler heads with anything but a Buck 110.

Thanks for all the feedback!

I'm definitely going traditional for now. Just ordered an opinel 10 slim, simply because it's $19 with free shipping and it seems cool.

But the next serious purchase will be a traditional of some sort.

I have 2 kershaws and a rat 1 that I rotate out with a rat 3 and leatherman super tool....that's my work edc.

When I'm not at work I have a little Kershaw leek. That's the only "nicer" knife I have that I actually like. So I'm going to add to the non work rotation and see what comes up!

I never liked the looks of Spyderco until I decided that I needed a "good" knife. After researching everything I could find I decided on a Paramilitary 2 or Griptilian. Found a dealer with the PM2 and it was love at first sight. Loved it so much I said why would I ever need another knife? Well that was years ago and I cant stop the bleeding. I moved up the food chain but the experience has been rewarding because I now now what I want in a knife. Buying my 1st Sebenza next week.

If you wanted to gather some ideas about options in traditional patterns, you might take a few hours and look through this thread in the Traditional Forum:

It's been running for about 6 years and has about 50,000 posts in it. Everything from Opinels to customs.
