I am almost done with my first knife and i want to make a few more. The thing is ive got no room or money to really temper any 1084,1095,w1 etc. I got ahold of a nicholson usa and just worked it into what i wanted. Im not really sure what to use for my next knives. I want to use decent steel but im not really sure what to go after. In your opinion what direction would be good to go?

I second the 1084, 1080,1070 route. If you want to heat treat it you can, but better than that, it's cheap, readily available and ANY heat treat shop or local knife maker can heat treat it for you if you don't have the gear for the task.

Does 1084 have to soak at the target temp? I see alot of people say canola oil to quench.

Edit: i think ill stick with stock removal and play with 1084 if i can find any.. i got myself a bernzo 'high heat' hand held torch so ill see if that will work for me. Stock removal on a hardened 1095 file was kinda a PITA but i enjoyed it.

See if you can come by a couple of soft fire bricks and make a small forge with your hand torch. You may be able to make it work for you.

Also, fill out your profile. There may be some makers local to you who'd be interested in helping treat a few blades.
