I was very excited to recently pick up a Snow and Nealley Hudson Bay axe in the Exchange. Great user, bites deep, easy to free. The head is not heavy, but has enough weight to bite deep. I am looking for something with a bit longer handle, but this is the best of both worlds. I have an Estwing camp axe, Estwing hatchet (both received very sharp edges courtesy of Scott Gossman), and while seesawing on a Cold Steel Trailboss, I picked up a Collins boys axe. The Snow and Nealley is the best out of what I have.

I am looking for a small axe for use in the woods. Camping, clearing horse trails, clearing space for fences for my Houdini like pups. I am looking at Wetterlings and GB. What other makers are out there?

Mueller and Oxhead are a couple more options.

Are you thinking full size, such as a 30 - 32'' handle with around a 3 - 3.5 lb head, or something just under a full size? For uses you described, a 28'' handle with 2-2.5 lb head is ideal, in my opinion. Lots of choices on that weight axe heads on ebay, just look for Kelly, Collins, Mann, Gransfors, or Plumb. If you are only considering new, then Oxhead has some choices that would be great in that size. See the Small listed here http://www.highlandwoodworking.com/ox-headforestryaxesmall.aspx

I think the S&N Hudson has a 1 3/4 lb head, so the additional weight and length on the handle will make a significant difference over the Hudson Bay.
