What off the shelf grease or oil for your Seb?

I don't think there is anything wrong with looking for something better. Nano-oil isn't cheaper than the CRK grease. MANY people have other knives than CRK. I have found that CRK grease with a dot of nano oil works really well. I am sure it has nothing to do with how much the grease costs...
 
I have thought of an alternative as well over the years, especially when I misplaced my CRK lube after moving. I was just at the point to buy another tube when I came across mine. A tube lasts for years. I have the older syringe type and have had it easily 5 years. A little goes a LONG way. I just finally took down my large In God We Trust Large Regular after going 8+ months without doing so. Its like new again. I only take down my sebenzas when they start to get a little tighter and not as smooth..............I also recently bought a small sebenza and it was very tight. I took apart and cleaned and lubed and its factory smooth now and just like new. I highly recommend the CRK lube to anyone. Its inexpensive and I think its the best as thats what CRK recommends. If its good enough for Chris Reeve, its good enough for me.
 
I have been using a grease I picked up at a local gun store. I use the same stuff on my M-1.

I think you somewhat missed the point of my original post. If you religiously maintain your knives and want to carry the specific CRK grease on any of your extended trips that is great, but not necessarily the case for everyone. As I've used Sebenza, my favorite part is that I can break it down for cleaning or maintenance after pretty much anywhere with a single readily available tool (no, I don't usually carry the specific CRK wrench either but finding one that works has never been an issue). The knife guy in me says "sure throw CRK grease and the wrench in your bag," but eventually the rationalist takes over and I know that I can grab a wrench from any hardware store anywhere in the world in a pinch and they are likely also going to carry some oil and or grease that could work too. I was just curious if anyone had good luck with anything readily accessible because it would be nice to make the best choice in that situation.

You must take some extended trips.

Per CRK, you really only need to break down your sebenza and clean/lube it once a year. That's one of the nice things about grease as a lubricant; it has staying power, like in-laws. :) Routine care is soap and water, tooth brush if you drop the pivot end in fine mud.
 
Frog Lube ftw - you heat up the knife to apply and it bonds as it cools. It is completely plant based so it's safe for food prep. I use the paste and it's more like a car wax, it stays on the blade once applied with heat for a long time and anything that gets on the knife just wipes off super easy. I use a thin layer of non-melted paste on the blade at the pivot and it stays in the washers with the holes for a long time too, longer than the grease.
 
my order of 10wt Nano oil arrived yesterday and I am a fan.

I noticed a big improvement in my 21 and Zaan (even with a fresh application of CRK grease less than a month ago)

Its only been a day and a half but time will tell.
