What oil for oil stones

Do most makers use stones to sharpen their blades? NO. Belt grinder and a buffer. Why use oil or water when you can use Dry or diamond stones?

Buffers have been shown to remove much more steel than needed and give a duller edge than very fine hand stones or powered leather wheels.

I read here somewhere on BF that Krein uses a 120 grit ceramic belt. I wish he'd come on here and describe how he does it, because I cant get close to replicating what he does. I tend to agree that belts and buffers are used more because of speed than anything else. I certainly wouldnt want to be staring down a line of 500 knives with a Course/Fine India stone as my only option.

I heard Krein uses a leather belt and pixie dust, with occasional dunkings of the blade in Miller! I'm old school, and prefer to throw a virgin into a volcano... :D

Please tell us about what Hartsfield and Krein use!

John

No idea what Tom Krein uses, but I'm pretty sure Hartsfield does not sharpen a blade by hand as it would take 1000000 years because of the hardness of his edges. :D Plus the edges don't have a secondary bevel.
