What oil to protect blade?

Humm, are you looking long term or short term storage?
I have a few knives (in Kydex Sheaths) and "other steel items" in long term storage and recommend Break Free CLP and Zcorr Collector Series Storage bags.
They come in a variety of sizes (including one big enough for your Butaniku), and can be resealed. I checked on a few items that have been stored for over 7 years and they're in perfect condition in their bags.

I am ready to be schooled on long-term effects, and open to ideas. I will however, throw the very small percentage of possibly ingested solvents into the discussion.

This negative effect will also perhaps, be somewhat degraded by time, evaporation, and solvent scrapped off by unsheathing. And of course, how often one utilizes that oiled blade for food preparation. So, I believe a very miniscule amount of truly harmful material could find its way into the digestive system.

But...I do love a heated discussion. But like to keep it on friendly terms on BF. And just to be safe(r), I use mineral oil (which is a petroleum distillate).

Have a great weekend!

Does anyone use Balistol or Hoppes 9? I've been using Balistol for the blade and Hoppes in the pivot (I've read that it may corrode bronze?) Balistol seems like it is relatively food prep safe?

I would put Ballistol above break free in performance but it’s double the price (well in Australia it is). The law of diminishing returns and all that.

Renaissance Wax.

I am curator of a private trust museum. We use it all the time as a rust and oxidation preventative surface coat.

It is a phenomenal product.
