What part of knife making do you like the least?

I have to go with hand sanding the flats, I dread it.

I made a sanding block, kind of like the one aaron gough makes on Youtube, mine is made of oak and a little bigger. I can sand the flats of a regular knife in about 5 minutes if I have been careful and not accidentally put a deep scratch in it. i used an old piece of oak that came out of a hog barn and is hard as nails. Works like a charm my friend.

In his video he mills his and makes it way pretty, I used a round file and cut some grooves and bought a few .59cent orings from Menards. If you dont have a menards or somewhere that sells big orings in singles, you can go to Lowes and look in there plumbing repair area and they have different size orings as well. I have used them before i found the stash at menards.

I'd have to say for me it's when I'm getting a knife nearly completed and then do something to mess up some part of the knife which causes me to have to back track...Kind of like a juggler trying to keep all the balls in the air. When one falls and you go to pick it up another one falls.

This happened to me last week when I was selling my first knife. Oh, I'll just round this corner a little bit . . . . Whoops! A scratch! Let me just buff it out with some steel wool . . . . Oh no, the patina's gone!

I have this instinct from doing lots of crafts projects not to touch something that's "completed", and I gotta say I regret it every time I go against that instinct.

I think we've all done that. Prefect is the enemy of good. I've scrapped so many blanks trying to get them "just a little bit better."

Finding that little spot on the handle that only I can see and sanding on it until I realize that it is the epoxy showing.

I figured since I replied to the "what I like" thread I might as well post in this one.

By far the biggest pain I have is what seems to be a never ending need for more tools... I can deal with cleaning the shop, do overs from mistakes, even getting over the price difference moving up to 2x72 belts, I was paying a buck a belt.

But man alive, every time I buy a tool and think ok I can get this done now, I'm ok for a while, it seems like I either run into an issue where I'm thinking "Damn I really need X to do this" or I read something on here where someone is using some new tool or a mill to do something amazing and then I open my "Tools Needed" list and update accordingly...

Does anyone here feel their shop is complete and there are no tools left to buy?

Fortunately I love tools so constantly oogling them and looking for deals on things I don't have is hard work only when talking to my better half, aka the boss

We are all tool JUNKIES! that's part of the sickness. I know this younger maker that buying another 2 x 72" grinder that hasn't made five complete knives with the first one. LOL

Cody, I agree that guards are a pain, for me it's milling out the slot to try and get that perfect tight fit.

We make knives because we like to, we make sheaths because we have to. My favorite part of knife making is the fancy handles made from stabilized wood. Every one I make looks better than the last one.

For me it's guards, I really like hidden tang knives and a good lookin guard really makes the knife, IMHO, but I don't like making them.

Right there with you. I hate slotting guards so much I just dropped over a grand getting a mill with tooling. I rather play with a new toy then slot a guard with a jeweler's saw for hours.

Sheaths. SHEATHS..

SHEATHS!

Ugh. Don't even want to think about them. Thing is, I acutally like them, and I don't hate any of the individual steps of making them... I'd just way rather be making knives most of the time.

I too hate making sheaths. But i actually dislike the whole process and the materials.
When i complete a knife, the fact that it needs a sheath really waters down my enthusiasm.

Thats one reason i prefer folders :D
