I'm curious......
What percentage of the knives do you own that are safe queens?
Are the knives safe queens because they are antique, limited edition or special in craftsmanship?
I know some collectors that will buy say......... a Chris Reeve knife.
CRK knives are very good quality, expensive. For them it is a grail knife. Too expensive to use.
All thoughts and opinions welcome!

My most expensive knife right now is a titanium Spyderco Military, so I know I’m not in the same ballpark as a lot of folks on BF, but I buy knives to actually use them.

EDIT: No judgment to those who have safe queens. There are undoubtedly blades out there that are works of art.

Oh.....the post was getting kind of long......
All my knives are users and the max price I pay is about $200.
If I paid more...... I mostly likely would not use them. Don't own any antique or special knives.

I have 2 sets of knives. Ones that I use for work or out in the woods etc.
The other set I only carry in the evening or the weekends.I’ll still take them out, and I still use them, but they don’t get used hard unless out of necessity.
So on that basis-

99% of my collection of currently 337 knives are safe (or closet) queens because I've only actually carried or used (only to cut paper or string) 3-4 of those knives.

I do have a couple of designated "users" in the collection -- a Gen 1 Endura and a Buck 110 -- that I have actually "used" in the past but not recently.

I also own many other knives (mostly kitchen knives, including Swiss Army Explorer that I keep in a kitchen drawer) that I use regularly which have nothing to do w/my collection.

0% I use everything I own, knives, guns, trucks, cars, everything. I probably only have about 30 knives though, so there is that.

0% here.

Everyone collects for different reasons and in different ways, but my enjoyment comes from carry and use. I don't see the point of safe queens.

If I'm going to buy something I don't use, I'd rather just buy a comic book I can frame and enjoy looking at every day. :)

337 knives......WOW !
I'm sure you have some antique and special knives in your collection.

I have more "safe queens" than I should, mostly because I just use something else. Usually my CRK. Time to do another purge.

Geez…now that you mention it…like 95% or so. I have a weekly rotation of work knives and several “food knives”, but the vast majority are in Pelican cases locked in my gun safe. I do cycle and maintain them all regularly (followed by maniacal wipe downs 😁).

One issue I see with this question is that there are multiple definitions of "safe queen". I probably actually use and/or carry about 30 or 40 knives each year, on average. Which means that I have more knives that I don't carry or use in a given year, than those that I do carry or use - again, in a year's time.

But I am not "saving" 95% of those "other" knives - I just didn't get around to using them, recently. My plan is to use and/or carry approximately 95% of my knives, over time. So by my definition, only about 5% of my knives are "safe queens". But if the definition of "safe queen" is what percentage of knives that you own have you not used or carried in the past 6 to 12 months - then it becomes probably 60-75%.

0%. All are used regardless of price. I hate not using them…I have tried with some but I am a Safe Queen failure.
