Rightly or wrongly, I have been using a Dupont compound, which is quite fine, and intended to rub out auto paint jobs. It seem to work fine. It does dry between uses though, so I add some oil.
I use a green chromium dioxide stropping compound developed for that purpose, from Lee Valley Tools. Comes in a large stick like a big crayon, and a little goes a long way. It is also an excellent polishing compound when used with a Dremel.
Not all buffing compounds are capable of actually polishing the modern high alloy blade steels. The CrO bar from Lee Valley that Ed suggested was designed to do just this and will leave a mirror finish, it is about 0.5 Micron or twice as fine as a 8000 grit Japanese Waterstone.
