What popular knives that you don't understand why

i like this thread!

i'll say any fixed blade greater than 0.19" thickness ---> BK2. . .so thick and inefficient that it works against you in cutting something
and ZT folders...same as thick fixed blades
and those folders that try to incorporate extra tools (IIRC that kershaw knife that has a screwdriver on its butt)

Fun fact--the BK-2 and the BK-16 have the same grind angle (or very very close to it) so the only reason the blade is so thick at the spine is because of how tall the blade is. :)

DLC or coated blades... they look pretty out of the box, but that's over as soon as you even think of using them.

D2 blades on high end knives... at least use PD1 or any number of higher end steels. Looking at you here, Brous- I love the looks- but that price for D2 (and in some cases coated) I'll never understand.

Waves and Tantos... I'm not a knife fighter & I don't know any knife fighters so I don't get why people swear by those features/shapes. Sorry Emerson- you make a fantastic product from what I've heard, but I'm clearly not the main demographic for you.

Zombification... The ONLY horror movies I like are Zombie flics, yet I cannot get into these neon green & blood spatter paint jobs that seem to cheapen some decent knives. Incidentally, I almost bought one for my cousin at his request, but was able to talk him out of it.

'hard use' folders that are designed for use that should be relegated to a fixed blade.
Oh, and anything serrated except steak knives and knives made from work-hardening steel.

Low end Kershaw.
They make all of these great looking knives, with good locks and handle materials, and then throw that junk steel in it, and still charge $40 (Cough cough Cryo/Emerson stuff)
Why won't you use AUS8 or at least 420? Or both?
For $40 I can buy a nice Vic Pioneer or CASE stuff or a Rat-1, and have better steel.

I'm not trying to start an argument, yes I am aware that people actually like 8Cr13MOV but I hate it.

This rage for amazingly over price Hinderer products of all kinds, and the big hype over Chris Reeves knives, I have held a sabenza, it was smooth and FF was good, other than that nothing appeals to me about his designs, nothing you can cut with that knife that i cant with my Endura in VG10..... ZT as others have stated and everything Stryder, nothing appeals to me about strider knives, especially those useless americanized tanto blade grinds, super wonky...even his silly ranger or elite military stories lol...silly.

I think it's fair to say you really really hate it man, when I see your screen name, I think "dude who despises 8cr" ;) Nothing personal for sure, it's not my favorite either, you've just become very memorable to me that way. It's all good.

Personally, I don't get all the hype about the Mora knives, cute little knife but steak knife blade, plastic handle and not even full tang, I couldn't head off into the woods confidently with that on my side.

I haven't personally used one in the woods yet, but I believe for many people a big factor is their effectiveness vs. their price--a lot of the money. Again, I haven't fully tested mine out, but it's been good so far. I'd probably trust it in the woods, myself. But I can see why people would be wary.

Yeah, I'll have to say Striders for me. I just don't get the ergos. Yes, I've held them and all that mass at the butt end of the knife doesn't do it for me.

Strider is one of those higher end brands that, if I didn't see it mentioned on the forums, I really wouldn't even think about. Name pretty much any other high end knife brand and I've given some thought to their models. I guess for me, Strider just doesn't leave any kind of lasting impression.

I've read this whole thread and am surprised no one mentioned the Cold Steel AK 47. I own and like several of their knives and those who own it say they love it but OMG to me it looks fugly, and uncomfortable to boot.

I also dislike chisel grinds on anything but chisels and perhaps specialized Japanese kitchen knives.

I actually loved that particular model enough to buy a back up. ;) It's in my pocket today in fact.

I love it as well, pocket opener + tri ad lock all win in my book. Plus very useful blade shape IMO.

Chris Reeve. I had an Umnumzaan and Sebenza, and neither seemed nicer than knives I have that are half their price. I like the design, and the warranty sounds good, but to me it's not worth the price hike.

Strider. Again, I like the design but they didn't seem well made and I can't overlook the owner's personal story.

However, I really like some ZTs and that's coming from a guy who mainly uses traditionals.

I probably could think of more...

I find it's both useful in size and shape, yeah. I do tend to gravitate toward my Large Voyager more recently, slightly larger and bulkier, but, the handles are less grippy. The one thing for me about the AK47 is how grippy it is in clipping and unclipping. But I can't complain too much, because I'm unwilling to sand down the G10 or do the JB Weld trick, etc.

I did a combo of lightly sanding under the clip and prying up the clip just a hair so its easy enough to to clip to my pocket one handed. When it was brand new clipping to my pocket was almost impossible.

It has certainly become easier, perhaps simply because I'm just used to it. Good blade overall.

anything MicroTech...contrary to popular belief. Just not into the design of that folder...
...and I don't want anything over five ounces...I've learned.
