Our Maori people apparently did not have metal prior to the arrival of European settlers. But they crafted some effective and ingenious tools.
One such item is the taiaha. This, to me, seems to be a combination spear and club. It isn't too long (maybe slightly less than the height of the man using it, although it probably varied). The club end is shaped a bit like a paddle. That way the force of the club acts over a relatively small area, thus being likely to cause crippling damage.
An item like this is handy to have on hand for reaching high fruit, steadying yourself on a slippery hillside, bashing animals caught in traps, and being ready to discourage unwelcome attention from unfriendly creatures.
A heavy club will obviously do more damage than a light one, but you may not be able to move the heavy club fast enough. This is why the relatively light taiaha seems like a good choice to me.
