What ratio/proportion makes an ideal main clip blade?

The ubiquitous clip blade. Which GEC pattern uses it best? What secondary blade do you find to be a good combination?

Back to the initial question, are the different clip blade proportions function or just for looks?

Edge shape and to a certain extent length is what cuts. What's behind the tip makes the difference on how the tip acts during the cut. Think about it. Clip has little behind the tip. Good for piercing, but try it with a spear blade, the knife has a much higher likelihood of closing on your fingers. The shape of the edge of a clip blade and the angle of the edge in relationship to the handle makes all the difference in how it cuts. Personal preference in my opinion. Mostly anyway.

Not GEC but I think this clip blade is one of the prettiest out there...proportions just look exactly right to me!!!!!

I'm not sure about ratio/proportions for a clip blade, but I know what looks good to my eye. Case peanut clip and a GEC Barlow clip are perfect to me.
I'm a simple guy. :)

Here is a picture of some of my 4" stockmen that shows a range of different clip blade shapes.

The second and third from the left are both Queens, and are the most pleasing to me. They have clips which are about 1/2 the length of the blade, with a nice upsweep to the tip. The Moore Maker at the far left is about a 2/3 clip, while the Robeson remake in green bone in the middle has a very narrow 7/8 clip. The yellow comp Buck second from the right has a convex clip which is less pleasing to my eye.

Here is another comparison, between a Case sowbelly on top, a RR sowbelly in the middle, and a RR stockman on the bottom.

Not only are the blades slimmer, but the whole frame is too, and the footprint in pocket gets dramatically smaller from top to bottom.
I carried all three of these at different times, and the two slimmer RRs were far preferable for my usage.

Another favorite for proportion and nick placement is this Owl Head large sowbelly, with 1/2+ length clip and gradual belly.

And finally, my favorite clip blade from GEC is their long pull as found on the #72s.

Thanks for posting all those blades for comparison, Jeff. My favorite is the Moore Maker, followed closely by the Queens. Makes sense, in a way, since Queen made the Moore Maker.

What I like in a Clip blade or any Master blade for that matter is a close ratio between handle length and blade length. Nothing worse than some short chetif blade and a whole lot of handle, or a blade with an exaggerated tang that reduces the cutting surface/length of the blade.

Others will differ, no doubt.

Absolutely love the GEC #54 Big Jack. 4 1/8" closed.

I carry and use it 80% of the time. The blade combo is perfect for me. I like a relatively large main clip. If they made the same knife with a pen in front I would be in the stratosphere. The #78 will be out soon though!

Cutty, this Marbles #276 Cattle Knife is just what you described, and a darn nice knife for under fifteen bucks.
Same size as the GEC #54, but 440 stainless instead of 1095.

Not a great picture, but to my mind the Case Copperlock has about as nice a conventional clip as can be found. I like California/Turkish clips as well, but consider them a different blade.

here is an assortment of clips. I like the way the texas jack clip rides in pocket, all sleek and sexy-like.
but i like the big beefy 85 clip for cutting

the 309 clip is an unusual beat, to me its more of a piercer than a slicer, but perhaps others feel differently

I've got a thing for Camillus clip blades. Mr. Gibbs did a fantastic job.

The swooping, stealth bomber, look of the Canal Street clips is very pleasing to my eye. The angle of attack for slicing is perfect. That being said I don't see any clips on this thread I don't like. The clip is surely ideal....esthetically. No?

Also like the saber grind clip on this Colt Gunstock. For less than $20 delivered it's pretty nice.

I don't own one, but the clip on a GEC #15 strikes me as the perfect example. The blade on a Case Mini Copperlock is pretty sexy as well.
