Just out of curiosity, what replaced type A quench? I've got enough for a while yet but will eventualy need to get more or an equivelent.

Thanks

Might be a little difficult to get ahold of, but the Parks "AAA" is an equivalent speed.
As is Brownelle's Tough Quench. (A lot easier to get)

The toughquench is a bit spendy, McMaster-Carr has a slow oil that you might want to look at for fairly cheap. They've been using the same outfit for several years from what I can tell.

Thanks, I'll check them out. I though Brownell's tough quench was a faster oil, I've been meaning to get some to try on damascus.

Will I think Darren Ellis has a similar replacement for Texaco Type A, shoot him an email.

Brownell's "Tough Quench" is a Houghton International quench oil... Houghto-Quench "G". It can be gotten directly from Houghton in 5 gallon batches for a lot less per gallon... comes out of Pennsylvania.

Houghto-Quench "G" is very similar to Park AAA. Houghton also has a fast oil, Houghto-Quench "K" that is similar to Park #50. There is a discussion on these and other quench oils on SFI forums in the metallurgy sub-forum http://forums.swordforum.com/showthread.php?t=53085&page=4

Searching "Houghton" - "tough quench" - "Houghto" in that sub-forum will get you more on these quench oils, I think.
