What SAK tools did you once think .....

..... were pretty silly, and that you would never use, but now wouldn't want to do without???

For me it's the toothpick and the scissors. I find the 'pick a very discreet, handy little tool to use, and use it every day now. And I thought I'd never have use for a scissors - totally wrong there.

So, what SAK tool has surprised you?

I think that the little screwdriver on the end of the can opener looks a little silly. But then I found I used that one the most.

I also choose the toothpick. Its the reason I edc a Hiker instead of a Farmer.

Like almost everyone else in the world, I thought the hook was useless until one day I had to lift a bundle of paper tightly bound with wire and not long after, same thing with a bale of straw. It was a big help. On another occasion, it made a good field expedient hanger for my jacket. There was another time it was helpful, but I can't remember what for  :D .

When I started being interessted in knives I always thought one blade is enough... but now I like the SAKs with a little blade on it, for all the "dirty" jobs. The "Universalhook" is still a little mysterium for me...

Kind regards...

I use the tooth pick of my black Classic on a daily basis. never expected that.

Same with the awl on my Farmer.

The tiny little chisel on the backspring. I have used it for cutting clean hole in belts (been slowly losing weight :) ) and believe it or not it works beautifully for releasing spring bars on most watch bands (not metal bracelets though).

The can opener.
I used to think it was kind've silly, but now, I couldn't live without it.
It's my scraper, poker, prodder, screwdriver, staple remover, box opener, hook, and general dirty/tough use blade, as it is sharp enough to cut. I LOVE that thing. I would be more then satisfied if Victorinox came out with a two blade 84mm alox knife, which had just a knife blade, and can opener. By FAR my favorite tool.

 Thanx for the tip. Although I've had my Swisschamp for decades without using this implement, because of a slightly chipped edge I know the little chisel must have been used for something, but I don't remember what.
The only thing I have for sure never used is the small backspring mounted screwdriver. If someone has a good idea of what to do with it, please don't hold back. :D

the awl and hook, and corkscrew for me. I thought they were a waste until I tried them and gave them a chance, now I use them all the time and totally appreciate them.

I also still don't see the use of the back-spring phillips! a short-T-handled screw-driver (ah huh, that's a good idea rolls-eyes)

I luv the in-line front drivers, but not on back.

What chisel? The awl?

I use everything on my wenger evogrip 18 except for the awl which i find pretty useless, the bottle and can openers, the screw driver on the end works though, and i have never used the wire stripper and dont think i ever will, i can see the idea of using the can opener as a small blade because looking at it i think it would work, but when would you use that instead of the normal blade or the scissors?

Oh, i forgot about the toothpick i never use that, and the tweezers are not very good but i have used them once or twice, i still dont know why they would even bother putting these tools on there but oh well i guess some people use them

Without a doubt the most useless SAK tool is the fish scaler. Who wants a folding knife full of fish scales and slime? It's only merit is the ruler.

omg now I want/wish for SAKs with 2 awls! (different sizes) the awl is right up there with most used tools for me because so many times I need to make a hole in something and I hate to use my regular knives tip.

even if my blade has a good/reliable tip it's still much safer for me to use the awl, plus it's faster and does a better job.

I use the tooth-pick all the time to clean out in between things (like on the typing keyboard) where metal will scratch or could short something out, works great, it's flexibility comes in handy.

I don't think I've used it for my teeth! lol
