What shall we do with a rusty saw blade?

Yeah...knock the snot out of it and learn if nothing else.

As Kis said...rocks.

Thanks very much, I was just saying that making my first knife from a gaint saw blade might not be an easy task. It looks like now, as you say, I shouldn't even bother. Thanks for saving me from such a wastefull past time.

Archer, Kis is right and what I said is a challenge.;) The whole idea though is to not let your mind defeat you before you ever start something.:grumpy:
There is indeed a great power in positive thinking and I have found over the last 67 years that positive thinking applies to every part of every man's life.
It is indeed true that, "If can, can. If can't, can't."
If you make up your mind that you can indeed make a fine knife outta that formidable big hunk of steel then you are already half way there.
It may not be the prettiest knife ever made but who cares? It will be yours and if you pay attention to the help you can get here about making the knife and then hardening and tempering that knife then you will have a knife that will serve you and your kids and their kids for a long, long, time. And if you decide that you can indeed make your knife your second one will be even better.:thumbup:
You should'a seen some of my first attempts using old leaf springs.:rolleyes: :barf: ;) :D

I happened to find a neat example of what looks to be a really neat knife made outta an old saw blade on another forum. I wouldn't mind having this one for myself.:thumbup: :D :cool:

There usualy very good tough steel, take a great edge, but rust easily. Some are differntly tempered , depending on size & age.

Sometimes it can be done with pillar drill & handfull of small diameter HSS bits to peirce a row of holes on the chisel line to further weaken it then hold in vice or nail to stump & snap of with a sledge hammer.

Watch you body parts though.

:D Its how the local farmers/fisherman/wooden boat builders do it round here!

They are a hardy bunch I admit! They go out into the atlanic in boats I wouldnt use on a village pond! {16fters.}

Sorry Yvsa, I didn't realise that it was a challange, and besides, you are right. I should just have a crack with confidence and see what happens. That is a really cool looking saw blade knife! I guess it is a good time to have a play with different designs. I've made a wooden model that seems to work well. Thanks for the advise and sorry I was so defensive. Now that I think about it that saying is what I use in archery. I never doubt myself as it is very important to have a strong mental game.
Thanks- Stephen
