hey guys my only sharpening stone a 1000/6000 grit water stone was broken so i need a new something to sharpen with. because i was constantly gauging it though id like to try a different system. could you tell me if the translucent arkansas or spyderco ultra fine ceramic are close to a 6000 grit water stone. also is it a bad idea finish off with a 12000 grit water stone if using something like an arkansas stone?

Perhaps you should give a guided/clamp system a shot.

Admittedly freehand is more fun. There are quite a few freehand sharpening videos on utube, watch them. Practice on SiC wet&dry sandpaper without cut/tear it up.

Spyderco ceramic bench stones medium, fine,uf are super tough, so it should able to withstand sharpening stroke mishaps (ok, the stone probably will break if drop to the floor).

edit: 12K is an appropriate progression after spyderco UF

Try DMT hones. I've had a set for over a decade and they still work as good as when new, maybe better. They don't break.
