What sharpeners do you take into the field?

hey udtjim and all the guys other guys that support the edge maker if i were to get the 4 step sharpening system do you think it would fit my half a centimeter thick Ka-Bar?

I have used it on the Next Generation Kabar fighting knife and the Kabar Warthog. I have even used it on my full sized hatchets. The Kabar knives that I have are a bit over 3/16 thick and there is a lot of room to spare.

I only take a little 400 and 600 grit wet/dry sandpaper. Works great!

I'm a recovering ounce counter. If I have reason to expect a sharpener will be needed, it's an EZE Lap diamond rod the size and shape of a small pen. It will do until I get home. Lately, I'm doing convex for the final edge so right now I have a square of 3M sandpaper in my wallet. I guess the recovery is kind of slow.:)ss.

i have used a diamond rod that fits in the handle and have now taken to carrying a carbide sharpener, bought it at lowes in the garden section near the pruning shears and such. corona make it cost about 6.00

if you use it edge side down it will work on a very dull blade, if you use it edge upyou can hone the edge, works on any sharp thing, axe knife and for 6 bucks if i lose it so what.

Lately i've been carrying one of those (sometimes two) DMT credit card sized sharpeners.
Before i got those i used a Spyderco Doublestuff double-sided (fine/coarse) sharpeners for years and years.
Actually i still end up using the Spyderco most of the time anyway.
The DMT works fine and is more compact but i just like the Spyderco better i guess.

I've mostly carried a cheap pocket-sized, medium grit artificial hone stone - maybe an inch wide and 3.5 inches long. Sometimes I carry a small triangular file in my plastic 'possibles' jar in my pack.

Since I've been skinning possums on a trapline, I've taken to carrying a short ceramic rod. It is quick to use like a sharpening steel...but I've found that I don't need to use it much.

My latest acquisition is a small diamond sharpener. It is a cylindrical rod with one narrow flat side and the whole surface (flat and round) of the working portion is covered with diamond grit. Amazingly I found that one of the cheapest sources for these was in my own country for a change !! I bought a few of them....and they cost less than NZ$9 each. They'd seem even cheaper converted to US dollars. I got them via the internet from a place called Gr8pics. Here is some info on them:

I think the diamond grit is around 600 grade. It doesn't make a highly polished edge, but it seems fairly ideal for field sharpening where a moderate amount of metal may have to be removed. It also has a groove for hook sharpening, but I can't see myself using that often.

Best wishes for the holidays..... Coote.

Unless it is a few weeks out camping, I never need a sharpener. My BOB has a small ceramic though. If I was to carry something it would most likely be some 400-800 grit paper.
