New to this forum and I'm fascinated by spyderco brand knives and would like to get some suggestions on what my first spyderco knife should be. I'm an outdoors man type, I hike, backpack & climb and recently started sea kayaking. Any thoughts you can give will surely be appreciated.

Update: finally got my spydercos:), awesome knives.

The Endura or Delica are really great knives. My first Spyderco was an Endura and it hooked me on Spyderco for life.

I just purchased a Tenacious. I really like it and its price. For kayaking I would probably look into the Salt series. Salt is rustproof. They are pretty sweet and not priced too high.

Budget? I would suggest the tenacious (or one of it's smaller siblings) to help you get the idea if you like the Spyderco style or not.

Para 2, in my opinion one of the best designed production folders, and with a price point of $90-$105, its hard to beat.

What length blade do you want?

Large, I'm partial to the Military. Very, very light knife for its size, and a wicked slicer.
Medium, I like the Para 2.
Smallish, I like the Sage 1 or Sage 2.

Those are my favorite three, and I have a user of each one. Opinions will vary though.

For a first, I would go with the Tenacious or perhaps the Delica. If you have a bigger budget then the Paramilitary 2 would be a good choice. It all depends on what you are looking for and your budget.

recently started sea kayaking

Perhaps a 'Salt' version of the Delica or Endura? Depending on which size you'd prefer.

Salt knives feature H1, a rust proof steel still capable of holding an edge. Note that because H1 is work hardened SE salt knives will hold their edge better.

Plus the yellow handles can be fun to rit dye :D

Military, Paramilitary, Sage, Caly, or Manix. For sea kayaking look at anything in H-1 steel. In fact, pick up a Pacific Salt w/black blade. It's essentially an Endura in H-1. Good luck.

If you want to just try out Spyderco I'd say start with the Tenacious. Cheap, but a solid knife and a good representation of the company even at its lower price point. If you want to jump right in I'd say the para 2 (whatever flavor you want, or can find), the Endura, Native 5 in g10, or Stretch. All are solid work and play knives.

As a side note, If you're outdoors and romping in a wet environment vg10 is great blade steel in regards to resistance to rust.

i think its hard to beat the delica. i own a few knives including a sage 2 and i think the best value is the delica.

My first was the Manix 2. I was impressed with how stout this booger was that a few days later I ordered a blacked out embassy

The para2 is really the way to go; I love the military, but it makes people twitchy due to its size and may not be in compliance with local laws for the same reason. With a cutting edge of 3.1 or so, and the truly smart overall construction (ergo's, weight, mid-sized, steel, grind, etc...) it almost always is in my pocket. A great all-around choice.

For backpacking and so forth the Delica would be a good knife. It is big enough to be useful but small enough to be easy to pack, very light, and durable. There are lots of good choices though, the Paramilitary 2 is a good choice if you are willing to spend a little bit more. The Gayle Bradley is a good model if you need something that is tougher.

For the activities described there are many that might be suitable. I would tend to echo the Salt recommendations specifically for saltwater kayaking due to the H1 steel that will not rust. I tend to use the discontinued Caspian the most in my kayak, but the Salt 1 is a good mid size for that purpose. For the other activities the Delica, which the Salt 1 is based on, is an ideal place to start. Both are lightweight with slim profile yet provide good ergos & secure grip. If you have large hands and/or the need for a longer blade the Pacific and Endura big brothers might be best for you. They all are top sellers for a reason and outperform their price point by a good margin.

I would say the Paramilitary 2. It is a lot of knife for the money. It is large without looking large and doesn't seems to scare people like the military does.

You need three Spydercos in my opinion...A Delica is my M-F work knife..Endura is my weekend carry and a Pacific Salt spydy edge is my kayak/camp knife (one of them)..My three musketeers...CD

BTW the Endura is what sold me on Spyderco..Its perfect

+1 Endura, there really is nothing wrong with it. Okay it does look a bit unconventional, but it grows on you fast.
