Hey everyone,

I'm looking for a budget daily carry folder. I tend to be a bit harsh and cut alot of green and dead wood, whittle, mess around, open boxes, cut plastic ties, strip coax cable. Alot of times, I'm just messing around whittling while shootin the shit around a fire. In any event, I don't want to abuse and a nice knive, but I dont want to hurt myself on a crappy cheap import.

I have a run of the mill old Buck, and it just doesnt cut it (sorry bout the pun...)

I know I cant get strong as an axe, sharp as a razor for $30 bucks, but I hope to get a non-serrated folder with a sturdy lock and one hand opening. 3 inch blade so I can carry it in Michigan.

Can anyone help me out?

Thanks!

Oh, one more thing

I need it to look as non-tactical as possible...I live on the very north edge of the suburbs, and the cops have a big budget and nothing to do but hassle me! Jackasses!

Hi, I'm not so sure that this is in the right forum. It sounds like you are looking for a one-handed opening folding lockback, which is a tough bill to fill with a traditional knife (typically they are slip-joints and require two hands to open). But on a more helpful note, look into the Spyderco line of knives, especially the Delica models.

Dude, get a sodbuster jr. It's three inches of tough-as-nails, sharp-as-a-razor, durable, handy-dandy cuttin steel, and about as "anti" tactical as you can get. It's not a one handed opening knife, but heck, you don't WANT a one handed opening knife. Those cops you have lurkin in your area are just LOOKIN for something like that. You'll be using two hands, but for all the chores you'll be putting it through, a 20 dollar sodbuster jr is a heck of a deal.

There is nothing illegal about a one-handed opening knife, so he doesn't have to make compromises and get a knife without features he is looking for.

No, nothing illegal, but we all know legality has nothing to do with what will prompt the men in blue to bust your chops. Plus while he said one handed opening, he also said NON-tactical. Tactically, you don't really use use two hands.

How about one of Case's Mid Folding Hunters or Russlocks? They are one hand opening but don't look tactical at all.

You can take a look at them here:
They've got good prices and good service.

The Russlock is a bit cheaper than the Mid Folding Hunter, but I think it only comes in stainless steel, while you can get the Mid Folding Hunter with a carbon steel blade that will hold an edge for a lot longer. Case's stainless steel is not the best around, but it is serviceable if you don't mind touching up the edges often (a little stropping helps a lot), it is really easy to sharpen. Their CV blades are a lot better, but they require more care.

Yeah, seriously - i'm in my 30s and drive a plain 5 y/o SUV, and I haven't had a ticket since my teenage years. No history, no arrests, no nothing but still I get hassled!

sorry had to vent. but thanks for the links everyone - looks like I need to find a few dealers to check things out.

Unfortunately, this area is almost completely overrun with big box superstores and the corner stores are either online or few and far between.
