Another vote here for the Sebenza, for the reasons mentioned above (although I've yet to hold one out of fear for my wallet)...
As a gentleman who has been on the recieving end of a bladed gift, I can tell you, that every day I carry the knife my girlfriend got me, I smile, because not only is it an exceptional blade, but so is the woman who put in the time and thought into finding one that speaks to me and my personality, but also has her "fingerprint" on it so to speak... Regardless of the knife you choose I have no doubts that he will be thrilled, and cherish that knife every time he opens it. Good luck with your search!!

I think a nerdy guy with interest in steel would appreciate what we call here "super steels". For $200 I suggest Benchmade MPR. It's under 3", the blade is made of M390 super steel, the frame is titanium, and the scale is G10. All of them top notch material, sophisticated but in an understated way.

Benchmade is not a custom maker, but it's one of the three top rated manufacturers around these parts. Besides, virtually only big knife manufacturers have access to super steels and the tools to process them.
Another alternative is Mcusta. They specialize in high quality, artistic yet simple folders. This is pocket jewelry.

Just my 2 cents...
I've got to say that Spyderco's cheap line (Ambitious, Persisitence, Tenacious, Resilience)
are some of the cheapest and MOST satisfying around... They perform just as well as some of my 100+ knives and I've never thought of them as 'cheap' in any way...
They were my first real folding knife and I use them all the time even though I've gotten many more after.
P.S.... why does my girlfriend keep getting me clothes?!?!... just getting him a knife is gonna mean more than enough!!!
